Officially NED - my onc visit

Postby dianetavegia » Fri Oct 09, 2015 3:44 pm

All is well. Dr. said in April 2017 he will pronounce me CURED. He said that the new info out says that 25% of Stage IV's are CURED and that once I passed the 3 year milestone post hepatic resection this past April, my chance of being in that 25% skyrocketed.

We do disagree on Vitamin D. He said he never tests it unless the patient demands it because the proof is all 'in retrospect' and there is no firm proof that it does anything for you. He wants me to take 200 IU's a day. Not happening! He did a Vit. D and Calcium today and said we'd just have to agree to disagree but he's worried about kidney stones (my calcium has been .8 over the high norm ONCE in 6 years, 10 months and that was 2 weeks ago). I told him I'll figure it out when I get my results and that 'in retrospect', I would love to be one of those who did take Vit. D3 and 5 years from now when he's telling all his patients to get their numbers up to 80- 100, that I'll be one of those survivors he's talking about.

Oh, just as a side note, tomorrow if our 45th Wedding Anniversary!

Happy day today! Happy anniversary tomorrow!
I'd just go ahead & celebrate for 2 days. ; )

I asked our doc about vit d. He just said smokers are always low. Waiting to see him. I hope they tested for it! He sounded like he would.

Hugs Di. We have been on this journey for quite a while. If you can survive marriage for that long , cancer doesn't stand a chance. I reach 17 years in Jan.I'm going thru another mini crisis at the moment. The targin (oxycodone/naloxone) that I have been on for over 18 months has to stop. I have found my blood pressure has been fluctuating wildly. My nephrologist said it is from pain. I have lived with pain for so long that it suddenly hit me that he is right. At sometime during every day I am going to hit 10. I am just so used to living with it. He said the pain is from opioid induced hyperalgesia. The oxycodone is now causing pain , not stopping it. I have been warned by two pharmacists that I face 16-20 weeks of very ordinary dose lowering withdrawl. They both said I really won't enjoy it. Then what . My neph has put me on a lower dose nsaid. He has to do bloods every two weeks to make sure he is not killing me. So congratulations for surviving but commiserations for what you may have to endure during that survival, survival is not easy, Hugs Ron.

LABS came by email and the slightly elevated calcium of 11.1 dropped 2 points. Everything was perfect. On 6,000 IU's of Vit. D3, my values were 87.3 so I'm very pleased. My onc figured out the cause of the calcium concern. I also read a possible reason. I had taken Alka - Seltzer that morning due to a queasy tummy/ nerves. Also, I read a very common cause for a false elevated Serum Calcium is a tight tourniquet and pumping the fist prior to the blood being drawn. I insisted the gal loosen the tourniquet and relaxed my hand during the blood draw.

So. That was more good news! CEA was excellent and down almost a full point even tho the previous one was also normal. Mine jumps from 2.4 to 3.4 except when I had a horrible sinus infection and bacterial tonsillitis.

Thanks for the well wishes!!

Ron, I developed mechanical allodynia on my legs and found a study that says it's caused by CNS damage from FOLFOX. Feel better my friend!

Congrats on the good report. I asked my doctor about vit D. He said it's the new "in" vitamin, and I can take it if I want. I do take it.
Also, congrats on your anniversary. We celebrated our 45th this past August.
Went in for surgery for a cyst on my bladder, and they found colon cancer growing on the outside of the colon. Got to have two surgeries at the same time! Stage 3, one node involved.
