HAI pump placement and caudate resection - when can I fly back home?

Postby mariane » Tue Sep 29, 2015 7:00 pm

When can I safely fly back home after HAI pump placement and caudate resection? I have small kids so I want to minimize time when I need ask friends to take care of them but I want to be on the safe side as well.

I suggest you check with the surgeon and/or oncologist about those first few weeks.
I was hospitalized 5 days and then I think I was seen once/week for the first 2-3 weeks. So you may have to decide either to stay a bit or be prepared to fly back and forth a bit.

Is this being done at MSKCC?
Are you having all treatments there or coordinating with a local oncologist?

Jan '15 FUDR and FOLFIRI
Aug '15 fudr done, liver clear, add avastin for lungs. Cea 4.3
Feb '16 CEA rising
May '16 2 wk break then drop Iri for 6 weeks.
Jul '16 cancer grew, constricted main bile duct. Stent inserted. On break till jaundice clears. CEA climbing. Doing reduced Folfox. Allergic to Oxali.

Thank you for answer! Yes, it is scheduled in MSKCC. My surgeon told me since we have small kids he understands I want to be home quickly but did not give me estimate time. I will undergo local pump flushing. When do they fill in the pump with FUDR fr the first time ?

Mariane,
Sorry, I don't remember the details. Hopefully someone else will. I think the anesthesia killed my memory for at least a month.

What I do recall is that they will fill the pump with saline while you are in the hospital. It will need to be filled again with something - fudr or saline - within the following two weeks. You will also have a surgical follow up 1 or 2 weeks after surgery. I had my first systemic chemo about 3.5 weeks after hospital discharge. I think, butt can't swear that it was also the first fudr. The week before my first chemo I had an appointment with Dr Kemeny BUTT she wanted to wait the extra week before starting my chemo - I suppose based on my blood work, recuperation, etc. So, you can be different.

We planned on staying a month, including the 7 days I was in the hospital. That would have worked fine but for some complications that I think are rare.

You can probably make a shorter stay work but will end up with a bit more travel back and forth.

It is a good idea to have a plan in place should you have complications, infection, etc.
Hoping to get to resection with HAI pump.

Thank you! I have small kids and no family here so I need to arrange child care... I am afraid of complications as all of us are. There is no choice for me. I recovered quickly from primary resection but there is no guarantee.
