Sorry I haven't been around much. Wanted to let you know where things stand with my husband. It has been a very stressful few months, particularly the past week and a half.
Instead of getting better after the reversal, my husband started getting worse... constant pain/pressure and clustering 30+ times a day. We checked in with the surgeon's office every couple of weeks, but were mostly told that slow recovery is often normal. The surgeon did schedule his full colonoscopy (had not been completed originally due to mass partially obstructing rectum) for Tue Sep 15. He had his first follow-up CT scan and labs a couple of days before the scope; CT scan did not show anything but CEA had climbed from 2.5 in May to current level of 31. When his surgeon did the scope the next day, she noted the anastomosis and surrounding area was very stiff/narrowed and inflamed. She took a number of biopsies, they came back positive for cancer.
He had PET/MRI on Monday of this week. Both indicated that the recurrence is local, no mets seen elsewhere. There is some suspicion cancer may be adhering to the sacrum. For that reason, our surgeon is referring us to a surgeon/specialist at the University of Minnesota, to ensure that the OR staff are equipped to deal with that possibility. I had been gathering information from friends who work in the medical field in case I felt we needed a second opinion; two people named this particular specialist as their top recommendation. It makes me feel better to know that. We don't know yet if my husband will need pre-op or post-op chemo. Actually, we don't know a lot of the details yet. But the oncologist said that we are still going for curative treatment, and for the moment, that's good enough for me.
I know I am preaching to the choir when I say this, but cancer is so sneaky and frustrating. He had 5 cm clean margins on either side of the tumor, no positive lymph nodes, completed all sessions of radiation and FOLFOX. No rhyme or reason.
