I personally started at full dosage, did not work up to it. Not conclusively known what an "effective dosage" is - but as far as I can tell no side effects.

Steph, your doctor's advice sounds particularly poor for curcumin, which is a tumeric extract. Tumeric contains perhaps 3% curcuminoids.

We've used 750mg - 1.4 g of curcumin per day with 5FU for years, mostly with bioperines.

Do you mix black pepper with it? I've heard that helps with absorption.

Many or most 95% curcumin formulations come with the black pepper (bioperines) already added in, look for "bioperines" on the label.

I haven't personally heard of this being an issue - hopefully if anyone has, they'll chime in-

Thanks rp1954. I know my onc isn't a fan of anything other than chemo, but I'd really like to start trying it, especially now that I'm on a chemo break. I have nothing to lose.

Thanks, Steph20021! I used curcumin during treatment with the approval of my oncologist.

This study reports for the first time that addition of curcumin to FOLFOX-based chemotherapy enhances efficacy in patient-derived CRLM cultures. Greater pro-apoptotic and CSC targeting efficacy was observed for curcumin than for oxaliplatin and 5-FU in a small patient subset, warranting further investigation to determine factors that influence response to curcumin. For the first time, safety and tolerability for curcumin in combination with FOLFOX chemotherapy are reported. A randomised phase II study comparing participants receiving FOLFOX only with those receiving FOLFOX + curcumin is currently recruiting.

And here's a link to the study, which is called CUFOX, in case someone wants to check it out.

Hi Julie,
Have you taken it with Xeloda? If yes, what dose? Also where do you order it from?

Thanks a lot,

Sha, yes with Xeloda. I took 400 mg of Super Bio-Curcumin with every dose of Xeloda (so twice a day). It is from Life Extension (see link below). A 400 mg capsule is equivalent to 2772 mg of a typical 95% curcumin extract.

Did Dr K let take you Curcumin while on FUDR? Her nurses told me not to take Curcumin with FUDR, stressed it, repeated several times.

I'm not knowledgeable in Curicumin supliments, but I wanted to post a helpful link for anyone interested in checking out herbals and alternative supliments.
http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed

This site with University of Maryland is helpful for those looking to see possible drug interactions with alternative treatments. MSK has a very helpful alternative medicine site too. I've found more listed interactions with the drugs I'm prescribed to limit symptoms , like Xanax or Compazine, than I have for the chemo. So far I'm just trying Turkey tail at 3600 mg/ day( on off days) and 10,000 ICU of vitamin D (I'm deficient).
