The explanation my mom's surgeon gave was that he does a temp ileo if he even suspects the surgical site should have extra healing time. He says if he doesn't do a temp and the site breaks back open, it usually results in a permanent colostomy due to scar tissue complications. It's the "safest" route to preserving a "normal" bowel after. At least that's what I got from his explanation.
