Neuropathy concerns

Postby rmblack » Mon Aug 24, 2015 1:32 pm

I had my last chemo treatment on June 18. The cold sensitivity has gotten better but I am still having issues with the neuropathy. I have peripheral and proximal neuropathy. Does anyone else have both of these? I was told the proximal isn't as common as the peripheral. My hips and buttocks hurts so bad some days I can barely walk. Does anyone know if walking more helps with this or makes it worse? I just don't know what to do. My feet still go numb and have that weird swollen sensation sometimes. I know this can be permanent for some people. Just wondering what some of you have done to deal with this.

On a positive note, my last scans in July showed I was cancer free! If I have to deal with neuropathy for the rest of my life I will just be grateful to be alive!

The arthritis type pain may or may not go away. My doctor told me that any arthritis you were every going to have would start to show up during chemo. I had minor discomfort but 6 years later, a knee will give me problems once in a while, the thumb joints.

Lisa42, who died several years ago, had real problems with arthritis from chemo. She saw specialists who couldn't really help her because the meds she would have been given were too damaging for someone with advanced cancer.

My neuropathy got worse at 6 years. I have mechanical allodynia. It's the most bothersome up to my knees with a slight amount in my thighs. It does concern me that it could one day cover my whole body but since no one really understands FOLFOX induced allodynia, there are no answers. I found a study on it that basically says chemo caused it, but nothing else.

I have never heard of allodynia. I will have to look that up. I am new to all of this. I took Folfox and I think it did a real number on me.

Allodynia can be to hot, cold or touch. The sheets touching my legs feels like I have a sunburn. One of our members told me a fan blowing on his skin causes him pain. Some people develop a form of allodynia where they cannot feel pain.
