onc dept reported 2 clean ct scans so far..would you ask another onc to double check scans jusr in case?

Subject title says most of it...dont want to offend the oncologist but hearing stories about hospitals missing things on scans and then patients finding out when it is too late is a bit concerning. .. happy with clean scans so far but would it be unreasonable to have an oncologist at a different kaiser look at them also?

If you feel you need a second opinion, go for it. Better safe than sorry. But isn't a radiologist that looks at them?

my father was first dx with colon tumor and 2 lymphnodes , after taking another opinion and looking at the same CT scane the new onc. mentioned that he have 4 !! actually the other two are NOT SMALL, he even took a tumor sample from them.

take another opinion, in case there is another scan make sure your CT scan is 2m and not 4m. they may even do it smaller than this not sure, but a lot of clinics do 4m

Radiologist reads the scans. It is up to the Oncologist to decide if he takes actions based upon the Radiology reports.

I would not, because I get them at a NYC hospital with a good reputation. Also, my oncologist provides radiologist with specific directions about how he wants scans analyzed.

I think it depends where your area of concern is.

With my first CT, they missed my tumor completely. I wasn't real happy that my follow up is going to be CTs since we keep getting denied for a PET. My Onc explained that CTs aren't good for the pelvic area but more reliable for other areas of the body.

So this next scan, I requested to do an MRI of the pelvis and CT of chest.

But I'm wondering if you really trust your Oncologist. I think you need to find one you trust more than just get a second opinion.

Radiologists read the scans and almost all places now have Computer Assisted readings. It points out things for the rad to rule out or might have not seen.

HOWEVER......... radiologists are not required to report lung nodules under 4mm. It's up to their discretion.

Image

Incidental lung nodules are encountered commonly in routine cross sectional imaging. The risk of developing cancer in very small nodules (<5mm) is very low. However, clear-cut recommendations are still not in place with high variation in practice amongst reporting radiologists As a result, it is common practice to make a 'note' of these nodules in the report and move on, leaving the ball in the clinician's court to decide whether to follow them up and at what interval.

As has been stated by others, your Onc does not "read" your scans. Your Onc reads the report that was prepared by others. You should have a copy of those reports as a CT scan will talk about everything and your GP might be very interested in those reports. All Oncs want to get reports from radiologists they know. So a different Onc is going to want to repeat the scan and get a report from their own team.
