Drinking coffee linked to reduced colon cancer recurrence

Postby radnyc » Mon Aug 17, 2015 6:34 pm

The study, published Monday in The Journal of Clinical Oncology, followed 953 patients with Stage 3 colon cancer who had been treated with surgery and chemotherapy.
Yes, is not a randomized study, and it was self reported, but we've been hearing about coffee's anti-oxidant qualities for a while.

"Patients who drank four cups of caffeinated coffee or more a day had half the rate of recurrence or death than noncoffee drinkers."

Interesting. I used to be a big coffee drinker, as I get older it hits me harder and harder, blood pressure up etc. But I love the taste of it. I went from 4 or more cup to 2 cups a day. I truly believe coffee will get more popular as the medical profession find more positive attributes about it. Many yrs ago I remember being told not to drink coffee as it leads to breast problem. Today those same doctors wants me to drink at least 2 cups a day.

When my bowels were waking up from surgery, I wanted coffee badly. Forget the food, just give me my coffee. Could not have any until my bowels woke up. When they finally did, 3 different people brought me coffee. Happy camper at last.

Boo. Oddly enough, I used to be a big coffee drinker BEFORE diagnosis. Now it gives my post reversal self almost instantaneous accidents. I miss it so, and now it's even a health food. Dang it!

Haha, I recently quit coffee because it was causing stomach pain and loose movements. Damn it. Might have to start drinking it again.

I post this often, but this seems like a logical thread for it... Fish + Exercise have the same statistical impact:

Anybody else drawing a line between this report and the Gerson method of coffee enemas?? Could there actually be something to that? If this report is to be taken seriously, I guess there must be. Excuse my ignorance here, but what is the consensus of the Gerson clinic/method here?

There are a lot of daily enema threads around here. Many folks have solved a lot of their bowel issues with them. But, there have been almost no mention of coffee enemas on those threads. Maybe once they were mentioned. Take a look at those threads.

But, yes, that is an interesting thought.

I groaned when I saw this. I can't imagine what 4 cups of caffeine would do to my sleep patterns.

Now this I can do! :)
I'm just a dude who still can't believe he had a resection and went through chemo (currently 13 years NED). Is this real life?

That's because the coffee drinkers who had a recurrence already died before they did the survey. Sorry to be so snarky, but self-reporting by patients is hardly a scientific trial. Obviously, the ones reporting lived long enough to report so it's inherently biased. An actual trial would have one group drink coffee and one not from the beginning of treatment and compare the results including any who had died with all other treatments being exactly the same. If the non coffee drinkers were all stage IIIc and the coffee drinkers were IIIa and IIIb, that alone would account for a higher recurrence rate. This sounds like very biased "research" by a coffee company.

It does say it accounted for a number of factors, stage not being one of them indeed, but half the rate of recurrence wouod be a big enough difference for me to do further proper studies. And it's a much more pleasant advice to follow than kale shakes or drinking ones own urine.
Don't think anyone will truly believe by drinking coffee and eating aspirine with curcumin he/she will be cured.
Would be good though...

I'm pretty sure if they followed 1000 people and half of them died, those fatalities would be included in the study...
The oncology journal wouldn't publish a study with massively flawed data.
It's intriguing enough that I've reestablished my coffee habit :). Tastes good. Pity about the bowel reactions hahaha.
