Xeloda dosage

Postby Lydia666 » Thu Aug 13, 2015 7:41 pm

I was wondering, for those who took xeloda, what is the dosage your doctor gave you during the 6 weeks of radiation? Mine gave me 1500 mg twice a day. I weigh about 175 lbs and measure 5 ft 6 in. Does that sound about right?

I am only asking because initially the pharmacist said you ll probably need 2300mg twice a day, and then the doc said 1500 mg twice a day. My oncologist is young and said she never prescribed xeloda before because in canada this has not been covered even by private insurances until recently. So now i worry she does not know what she is doing!

sounds right - that was my dosage too. Also, the dosage during radiation is a little lower that the dose during adjuvant chemo.

I have lost a little weight since surgery but think I was close to your size during radiation. My onc kept me so that dose for xelox (even though it would normally be a little higher) because he said his patients typically can't tolerate more than 3000 mg/day. My liver functions were always a bit high so I think he was right.

If personal experience is any guide, I would go with the opinion of an oncologist, even a young one, rather than a pharmacist. I find pharmacists overreach themselves quite often.

At 192 lbs. I was on 1800 mg twice daily for chemoradiation, so it would seem your Onc is in the right ball park !

WORD !

The pharmacist MAY be quoting for adjuvant dosing ???? BUTT IME ..... Pharmacists should keep their noses out of Oncologic dosings ... BECAUSE there is a variable dosing schedule for Xeloda based upon a LOTTA factors which your Onc has had to consider for YOU !!!! .... like BSA, BMI, other meds, patient response and radiation therapy.

I agree with CR....it sounds as though the pharmacist is dosing for adjuvant therapy and not for treatment during radiation. Generally speaking, the dosage for radiation is approximately 75% of the adjuvant dosage. Sounds like your onc is quite correct.
Trust the onc over the pharmacist. Honestly, I am quite surprised that the pharmacist even mentioned anything...unless of course the dose was WAY too high. You will oftentimes find that surgeons give their opinions about chemo and the oncs give their opinions about surgery (both need to stick to their own specialty) but I have never heard of a pharmacist putting in his two cents worth. IMO, very unprofessional.
