Milk Thistle

Postby Dad's Doll » Fri Jul 31, 2015 11:35 pm

I've been researching Milk Thistle for liver health. I'd love to hear from those of you who are actually using it. In what form do you take it - tea, pill...How often do you take it? How did you determine dosage? How long have you taken it? Anything that you can share would be helpful. Thanks!

I take milk thistle daily. Taking 2 pills @ 500 mg each. I just bought a good brand when I started chemo and continued after completion. I will double up for a week before and after any scans. Whether it helps that's a question ....all I know is my bloodwork has come back in the normal range.
Be sure to buy your pills at a health food store or online...avoid Walmart, Target or such stores.

I've used it since I was diagnosed. I had liver involvement at the time, so far, no issues in the liver (only the lungs). Three pills a day. Use a good organic brand.

Thank you for your replies! I talked to the pharmacist about possible drug interactions and she mentioned a slight one with simvastatine. Are any of you also on this drug or a cholesterol medication? Did your doctor mention any possible interactions? I want to talk to the doctor about his thoughts on this as well.

I could not find a listed interaction between milk thistle and any statins
would you be able to get more specific info from your doc or pharmacist ?
pharmacology is a kind of "hobby" of mine from vet days

Are you OK sharing what you use carm ??? I know you have had treatment and contact with an actual naturopath so I would be most interested. I have taken MT off and on over the years and used it in pets on occasion. Jamieson's brand is all I have used and have not investigated other brands / sources.

Thanks

Cheers all

I don't use a specific brand, I try to use AOR, Thorne, Organika or something along those lines. You can order them online as well if you can't find them at your local stores. In canada, try Vitasave (it used to be a local to BC company that was now bought out) https://www.vitasave.ca/catalogsearch/r ... lk+thistle. My ND recommends http://www.healthyplanetcanada.com. I haven't tried this one yet.

Thank you !!!!
I do have experience with both Thorne and AOR and they seem to have a lot of lesser known / poorly available items you can't get elsewhere.
We used to use Thorne for vet patients but started running into availability problems when Health Canada changed the Natural Products code regulations.
