paracentesis

Postby Voxx66 » Fri Jul 31, 2015 2:59 pm

I have a number of updates but will break them down into separate topics as I am too lazy to type it all out at once ha.

Anyway - had a paracentesis yesterday. 5.5L of fluid drained. Can now eat, drink, and breath normally though I think they didn't actually get all the fluid out. The actual procedure hurt much more than I expected. I also had an albumin infusion that took almost 45 minutes to get an IV started so I have holes and bruises all over my arms. (They finally got one through the back of the hand. Ouch. I hate that spot) Today I am sore as hell, dehydrated, low on blood pressure, and having some nasty Charlie horse sort of cramps. But I can eat, drink, and breathe! I'll take it.

Glad things eased up a bit for you buddy. The ascites is a real pain in the ass and painful !

The hand IVs are the worst and once even had a newbie nurse throw one into my wrist just above the joint so any time I moved the hand it felt like a spear going into the effin' joint.... lasted about 4 hours then I had the head nurse, who used to teach IVs put one into the outer middle forearm which was great and lasted 6 days without problems !

Just FYI once treated a very large Basset Hound which we saw every 2-3 months for over 2 years. His abdomen would fill up, wouldn't eat and struggled to breathe. After we drained him he was 100% good to go until the next time. You're right though there will be some pockets of fluid which you just don't get.

Stay safe and heal gently !

Cheers

Voxx, I don't know if its part of the procedure that makes you cramp, but maybe it's just potassium & you could try a banana?

I am thinking of you, Voxx. I pray you are feeling less pain today and you are hydrated now. I hope you are more comfortable.

The good: you did what you needed to do to get relief. The bad: Doesn't sound like their numbing potion was that potent. Sounds like they were a little rougher on you than my DSS's experience. The procedure didn't seem to bother him as he said they numbed the area first. He was under 5L drained, so did not need the albumin infusion.

Best Wishes

My dad had paracentesis several times during his journey. One of the times, they removed 20lbs of fluid. Afterwards, he his blood pressure was unstable and they decided that too much fluid had been removed. He ended up requiring IV fluids.

Hope your are feeling better.
