New Monthly DK Column: The Currently Incurable Scientist

Postby DK37 » Tue Jul 14, 2015 10:30 pm

I’m excited to announce that via connections with the help of the Colon Club, I have become the monthly Science Columnist for the national advocacy group “Fight Colorectal Cancer”.

The main message of today’s introductory column is an essay on why I am personally excited about new cancer drugs approaching and in clinical trials – excitement which translates into HOPE – for myself as well as I hope others. That is why I chose to call myself both “currently incurable” and “terminally optimistic”.

My goal in future columns is to explain the science behind experimental CRC drugs in an easily understood way. I love the science of oncology and I love explaining it to people, especially fellow patients! I hope that this information can help the CRC community & translate into better informed medical discussions with the patients’ medical teams!

And so it begins... http://fightcolorectalcancer.org/resear ... roduction/

Cheers,
-DK (shhhhhhhh, you now know my real name but thanks to Mr. Google constant snooping, I'll continue to stick with DK37 here  )

Nicely done "DK" ....
excellent intro blog to your new assignment !

The ColonTalk forum has always had a lineage of science folks who share, as patients, caregivers ... and "science folks".
That is what sets us apart from other cancer support forums.... WE have people coming into this forum, AT this disease, from all angles.

You join a long and noble tradition here.
All your input has been well received and every future input will be much appreciated.

Cheers and Harmony my friend

Thanks for the note CR Guy!

This new blog won't change what I have been doing here - posting what I think are cool new info in basically real time! If anything, the Colon Talk folks will always get a headstart because in most instances I'll post things here first in real time as I find them and then try to consolidate into more public & word-count limited summaries for the monthly column. Since the columns will be organized by theme & only monthly, there actually may be a significant time lag for some things you read here first. Two different forums, two different styles - but serving the same purpose - helping patients understand the science. Active Colon Talk readers will recognize topics I have posted about here already. :) The anonymity of Colon Talk also allows me to speak a bit more freely than a public column with my face and full name on it! - which can be a positive or negative depending on what I say haha

Actually something just popped in my head: If there are any science topics, primarily pre-clinical or clinical trial drugs/treatment strategies, that match the general goal of the column that you guys want me to write about - list them in the comments below or PM me!
GrouseMan's recent post about Rose Bengel is an example - finding new uses of old compounds/drugs could be an interesting new column. Or my recent post about the power of blood biopsies. Obviously I'll eventually tackle the famous NCI TIL trial too, hopefully with Sleen as the column's success story posterchild!!

Anyhow - the pressure is on! Hopefully I don't let you guys down!

This is awesome, DK! It's going to be an awesome resource not only patients and caregivers, but also families that have questions but find themselves on the short end of the information stick. Thank you!
