Chemo Side Effect

Postby BrownBagger » Wed Jul 01, 2015 10:01 am

I've noticed that lately, I can pretty much count on puking up anything I eat following a chemo infusion. Not right away, but by the next morning, typically. What happens is that my digestive system shuts down for about 18 hours after getting the juice, so anything I eat after that is just going to sit there. Last night, my light dinner and couple glasses of wine came back up about 3:00 a.m. I felt so much better afterward, that I'm thinking in the future I'll either not eat after, or just make like a Roman emperor and toss it all back up before going to bed. The yogurt with blueberries I had for breakfast did stay down. I knew the guts were back on the job when they started to gurgle.

Sorry for the dinner do-overs bro', BUTT the vomitorium sounds like a good idea if this is a consistent happening :(

Seriously ... do you think actual chemo related problem, or possibly after effect of any antinauseant medications ( i.e. slow down the gut, suppress the vomiting reflex, and leaves you with a big mass of slow moving dinner the next day ??? )
The Zofran really messed me up and plugged things solid for a few days, found a way to manage it but felt off / on nausea until I got going again ... BUTT being a cheap SOB who loves food ... NEVER gave anything back

Just a ??? maybe to the docs to see if they can consider a change up of some nausea meds IF that is on their radar.

They tell me it's from the pre-meds. I think I can get by if I have a big, early breakfast before the infusion. That should give everything a couple of hours to clear the gut. I'm not giving up on the post-infusion wine, however, so we'll see if that stays down. Here's a trick: suck on Tums after barfing. It neutralizes the stomach acid.

Who knew ???
Tums "...and a nice Chianti.... "

any chance they'd moderate the pre-med doses some for you ??
.. OR maybe leave well enuff alone ??

Recall I just about went without any Dex and just the one Zofran before Oxi ... 'cos I had no real nausea issues ... SO did not need or want the med overdoses.
BUTT they will always hit you hard to prevent nausea. Since you have an issue already ... my thinking is that plan is not quite on track for you so why not tweak it ???

Doing the liquid lunches is a great idea ... fluids being easier to pass thru the gut and all.

Keep kickin' it man.

I've got a love/hate thing going on with the Decadron. I do like the energy boost, but it makes it harder to sleep--hence the wine.

This whole side effect thing is a constantly changing landscape. Impossible to predict what's going to dominate each round. Just need to be ready for anything--which I usually am. Got plenty of experience.

Sorry, that sux. I have on occasion made myself puke when needed. Obviously as long as you don't make a daily habit of it

Re. Decadron...the last tx I got a sharp jaw pain (left side) from it. About 10 minutes after I took it. And continued off and on for days. It had to be the decadron or else another of the anti-nausea pre-meds. They have side effects too and it gets very old having to deal with them!

Yeah, the premeds leave your stomach in a comatose state. Puking is an option if you don't mind seeing what you just ate come back up. If it was me, I'd pick the post-infusion wine and stay away from anything solid. You are one tough cookie!

Eric, I do agree on a good breakfast before chemo, and don't eat for 12 to 14 hours. Sleep and hopefully poop, before the next day
