Who had stage 1 and 2 rectal, and how did it go?

Postby Lydia666 » Mon Jun 29, 2015 5:18 pm

I am having my first scans next week and hoping for some good news. I would love to hear some positive stories of stage 1 or 2 ... I need to keep my calm until i know the extent of my problem. Thank you.

Hi Lydia,
Sorry you are having such a hard time of this. As someone who developed panic attacks after dx I would concur with others' suggestions to ask your GP about medication and/or counseling. These definitely helped me through the last 6 months. I had a ULAR ( ultra low anterior resection) with a temporary loop ileostomy for stage 1 RC. Five weeks ago I had the ileostomy reversed. My surgeon says that my treatment has been curative but I will need to have a check up every 4 months for the next 2 years just to be sure. It's still early days for me but my life is pretty much back to normal, with the exception of a few extra toilet stops each day and a fairly bland diet. But hey I can still hug my babies (24 and 25 but I still love to hug them 8) ) so life is good. Try not to get too far ahead of yourself. Hard I know but important for your sanity. Will be swinging chickens for you.

Greetings Lydia.... boy did you get lucky finding this site........ you won't find a better place or better people.... If you're gonna have rectal cancer, this is the place to come for the facts... I was diagnosed in January of 2010... a routine colonoscopy revealed a "lesion"... that was as much information I had in the beginning... I didn't have any idea what to expect, and needless to say my anxiety level was pretty high. But, here is the good news.... as bad as I played it up in my mind, I was lucky that I wasn't too far advanced, I had a great medical team, and I had this place to help me put it all together. It's been 5 and half years now and I am NED.... I had my last colonoscopy a few months back and the doc said I shouldn't have to be looked at for a couple of years now. There are a lot of really harsh stories here, but know there are some pretty great ones too... you can check out my signature for my hx... being I was stage 1 I usually don't have a lot to contribute around here, but for early stage people sometimes I can chip in a word or two of encouragement. Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions or just feel like talking.... wishing you the best...

Thank you all. I do have panic attacks! It's awful.

How do they determine vascular invasion? Will the scans say that or a blood test?

Have you asked about anti anxiety meds yet? If not, do it now!

Hi Lydia.
I think that the pathology report from the biopsy should identify any vascular invasion. It should also report the depth of invasion into or through the rectal wall. This is the first part of staging. Mine was halfway through the wall with no vascular invasion. Then ultrasound, CT and MRI can be used to determine whether the lymph nodes or other organs are involved. Mine showed negative but the tests are not 100% accurate so I chose to have the ULAR so the lymph nodes could be checked. I had 0 positive out of the 25 they harvested. So I was staged as T2N0M0 (stage 1). No chemo or radiation.
Try to take it one step at a time. I'm sure that others would agree that it's a marathon not a sprint.
Best wishes 8)

Hi ritz, i have the meds but i am breastfeeding . I dont necessarily want to continue, i give her formula anyway, but she loves to nurse when going to sleep etc, so i dont want to take that away from her as i might be forced to do it soon anyway because of treatments. So thats why i hesitate starting the meds. If next week i find horrible stuff, i ll most likely take some.

Absolutely 100% not. Cancer doesn't work like that. Your baby is fine :-). But you're anxious and understandably so. The GP can advise you on a drug to use which won't comprise your breastfeeding.

I was DX 2a Rectal Cancer. I had a colon resection and then approx 5 weeks of radiation and Xeloda.
So far I am still NED. I had a MRI recently on my back and they noticed " Interval enlargement of several retroperitoneal and aortocaval lymph nodes. Largest measuring 1.6 and 1.9 cm in AP diameter located just below the bifurcation of aorta. These appear to have increased in size from the prior CT". So now I am waiting for my CT scan results.

I was a stage 2 - right through the rectal wall but not in any lymph nodes. I had six weeks of chemoradiation, surgery with temporary ileostomy, six months of chemo and I'm here five years from diagnosis, still NED. :D

Hasn't been an easy trip, and my reversal wasn't successful, I have a colostomy. But I've gotten on top of all the effects of chemo and surgery now and life is good.
