Blood Clot & Port

Postby Larijjo1 » Thu Jun 25, 2015 9:51 am

Hello,
Looking to hear from folks that got a blood clot from their port. How was it handled in your case? I have one in my jugular. I am on blood thinning shots. Doc wants to keep port in.
Any stories/advise would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Lari

I had blood clots associated with my port. The treatment depends on the severity of the issue. My port was removed and I felt much better afterwards.

The first sign was my port stopped working well for blood draws. Then a c/t showed some sort of occlusion at the end of it. It progressed to where I would get insanely dizzy standing up or bending over and actually passed out once and broke 3 ribs. I also started having this odd shoulder pain. A newer c/t showed a clear clot in the Jugular and several other smaller occlusions. It was severe enough that the port needed to come out. I started feeling better almost right away.

Been there. They tried to unblock mine with TPA and that did't work then they tried to rotor router it and that did't work so they removed it and put one in on the other side. Its my 3rd port so far. The first one was taken out because I went NED for a couple of years. i'm a clotter, just recovered from a pulmonary embolism. I am hoping my daily shots of Lovenox prevent another one. I blame the clotting on chemo because I never had a clot until I started chemo. It just an added perk!

Some people clot in response to the tube stuck into the Vein even if they never clotted before. I think that is what happened to me. My body didn't like that much.

That's a good point. The clot in the vein cleared shortly after the port was removed. Of course that does not explain why I have gotten 2 DVTs and a PE while in treatment. I blame that on the chemo. I had cancer long before I was treated and never developed a clot.

Mine was simply pretty intense pain and swelling in my neck. Ultrasound confirmed blood clot in jugular.

Hi Dorat,
Your port was taken out? Was it replaced?

I was done with my chemo so I did not needed any more. My Oncologies wanted me to leave it for at least a year after finishing chemo, but because of the clotting it had to come out.
