One of the ideas that circulate among proponents of alternative therapy for cancer is that cancer thrives on sugar and because of this, cancer can be starved to death by avoiding to eat sugar.

It is claimed that the idea is backed up by hard core science – the Warburg effect, which landed the discoverer the Nobel Prize.

Today we know and understand that things are more complicated than that.

In this post we will attempt to simplify the biochemistry/physiology involved and explain why the idea of a sugar depleted diet as cancer treatment doesn’t work in the real world....

........we will focus on glucose, because glucose metabolism is what the cancer-feeds-on-sugar myth is about.

The link that Mydogphoebe [what's in a name  / :) ] gave, reviews some of the research into the effectiveness of this therapy for the treatment of cancer.
For those of us who don't read the full article, these are the main conclusions:
  • Cells don’t distinguish between glucose (a sugar) from different sources
  • Large amounts of glucose are often – but not always – used by cancer cells
  • Large amounts of glucose are sometimes used by normal cells

Consequently, a sugar depleted diet is not a cure for cancer

Which doesn't disqualify the importance of the the Warburg effect that was rewarded with the Nobel Prize and is so effectively used in PET-scanning to light up cancer cells.
But as a cure for cancer it has not demonstrated to be effective.

Thus, ladies and gents, enjoy your Oregon festivities. NO need to be scant on sweeties and cakes.

When I was first diagnosed, some friends baked a cake and brought it by our house, it probably didn't help with the cancer... but damn it was goooood! Cupcakes and cakes, Oh my!! I usually prefer my sugar in it's purest form... Chocolate!

The third time cancer came back, I swung a deal with the cancer gods: OK, no sugar. I was pure. I was righteous. I read all the articles. I challenged my doctors. And then it came back in the lungs, and a few lymph nodes have grown since my last scan. So for me today, life's way too short not to imbibe in the sweet stuff. Bring it.
