The Caregiver's Bill of Rights

Postby Maggie Nell » Thu Jun 18, 2015 7:39 am

The Caregiver's Bill of Rights, developed originally by the Alzheimer's Association for the caregivers of people
with Old Timer's disease, applies equally well to people caring for cancer patients. If you are a caregiver,
consider the following and reread it as often as you need to:

I have the right to make mistakes and be imperfect.
I have the right to forgive myself and begin anew.
I have the right to say no and not feel guilty or selfish. (good luck with that one!)
I have the right to relax.

I have the right to let go of yesterday and embrace today.
I have the right to enlist the co-operation of my family.

I have the right to laugh and be happy.
I have the right to arrange my own priorities.
I have the right to take time for myself.
I have the right to have my needs considered important by others.

I have the right to be free to do special things for myself. (like leave the country, no forwarding address)
I have the right to take time off even if it costs money.
I have the right to take charge.
I have the right to make decisions when other family members refuse to participate.
I have the right to be self-preserving so that I can take care of others.
