new member with ostomy question

Postby FirefighterG » Tue Jun 09, 2015 10:47 am

My husband Mike is allergic to the glue on his clostmey wafers. We have tried some different company's but was told the same glue is used on all of them. The allergy Mike had was to superglue. The same chemicals used to making the wafer backing glue. Mike has to cut the wafer around the stoma cap So it doesn't touch the skin.Has anyone had this problem? Or know a product we can try?

Welcome to the forum FirefighterG

I have moved your post from the NEWS topic onto the main forum so that other members can post into your own discussion.

The only products I used were the powders, sprays and "paint on" liquid.
Also tried a spacing/donut a couple of times but did not have allergy issues.
You may need to consult a good ostomy nurse who can advise you in person ???

There are a number of ostomates here so I hope they can add more info for you.

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear this. I have only had a colostomy for about 6 weeks, and use a 2 piece pouch system with a washer too. I have only used the Eakin washer, and it works good, but tends to dissolve a bit which makes it difficult to completely remove all of if. One of the Ostomy nurses suggested I try the Hollister "Adapt Barrier Ring" (order # 7805).

Sorry, I don't know much about the adhesives used on these washers.

Good luck and I hope you find a good solution.

Brian

If you haven't already I would find a good ostomy nurse. Or if that isn't possible call the ostomy companies and see if they have any special products. I have issues with a yeast infection that won't go away and several layers of powder seem to help a little in creating a barrier between my skin and the adhesive. But don't know if that would help in your case. Good luck!

Get a sample from Cymed, it might work. http://cymedostomy.com/home.html
The wafer is the same as tegaderm. I doubt it has the same glue as the others, it's really good if you are dealing with folds or uneven skin or flat or innie stomas. They are a little tricky to apply but easy when you get the hang of it, there are videos on YouTube.

I'm allergic to adhesives. Tapes make my skin blister. I use Coloplast Assura wafers and no sting skin wipes. Sometimes my skin still gets irritated but this is what works best for me.
