Toothpaste!
Toothpaste!
Since I've been taking Xeloda the insides of my mouth have been really sensitive to toothpaste. I mean so much so that it literally "burns" everytime I brush my teeth. I've tried Sensodyne, but that doesn't seem to work. Anybody got any other suggestions? As of now I manage to keep my brushing sessions short

I use aquafresh kids. Not quite as minty fresh as I would like, but it doesn't burn.

When I told my dentist I was going to get chemo, he wrote a script for special toothpaste.

My husband was a fan of spicy food before chemo. He didn't have any trouble with Xeloda, but about halfway through FOLFOX, the inside of his mouth became super sensitive to anything spicy, fizzy or minty. Tears would come to his eyes. I think he used less toothpaste during that time, but we didn't switch. He finished chemo on April 10, and it is slowly getting better...

Exact same thing is starting to happen to me. I think I may try a natural toothpaste - or a combo of coconut oil and baking soda. I literally jump around when brushing my teeth because it burns so bad, but yet, I keep doing it. You just motivated me to get an alternative.

My onc. Suggested biotene toothpaste and mouthwash which works great.

Biotene gel toothpaste works best for me. On my very worst days I have used pure baking soda. It's OK short-term only as it may affect your enamel.

I think I read that you just need to avoid anything with mint. And we all know to avoid anything with alcohol.
Male Age 53. Dx CC with numerous liver mets 6/23/12. Colon res 6/24/12. Started folfox 7/24/12. Added avastin 8/27/12. CT 12/27/12 still showing shrink. Took 17 rounds of FOLFOX. Then 5-FU + Avastin. Switched to Irinotecan for 1 yr. CEA rose to >400. Switched to Vectibix 2/18/15. CEA decreasing. Scans show some growth in liver mets. Lung Mets stable to shrinking.

mmmmm.....i did try the biotene rinse and that was OK. i guess it's time to try the toothpaste! And thanks for not making me feel alone......my eyes tear like crazy when I'm brushing.

I would recommend avoiding any toothpaste with Sodium Laurel Sulfate in it. Try Tom's (you can get at Whole Foods or similar store).

My husband says the Biotene toothpaste works great! He tried Tom's toothpaste but it didn't work well for Him!

Just curious, would peroxide help or hurt? Sorry, I don't have that issue at the moment but may need to read this again if I do.

For me peroxide helped. Did burn a bit but not a lot. Really helped the sores.

Weleda makes a toothpaste out of aloe gel. Not only will it prevent the issue, it might actually help as aloe is a healing compound. Highly recommended. You can get it at health food stores, whole foods, or other such places.
