Port and FOLFOX

Postby DnJ » Sun May 31, 2015 8:07 am

Good morning new friends,
My DH will have the port installed on Thursday and FOLFOX will be begin the following week. The oncologist said it's 2b possibly 2c. Will ask him for clarification. Onc also mentioned genetic marker and something about satellite. Again, I will ask he to explain. DH said he's ready for it ! I'm not.

I hope the port surgery went well. It may take a while for him to get used to it. Mine still bugs me from time to time.

Good luck with the FOLFOX next week. If you haven't already, you may want to get copies of pathology and radiology reports for your own records/peace of mind. Most hospitals have online patient portals now, where you can go to download written reports.

Get it on the right side as to not interfere with seatbelt.

My first was in the right, mostly because I'm lefthanded. When I had to have it replaced they put it on the left. That's been 2 1/2 yrs and hadn't bothered me a bit. I'm very happy with it because the first one never worked right. The new one hasn't given any trouble at all. I sometimes forget it's there.
Male Age 53. Dx CC with numerous liver mets 6/23/12. Colon res 6/24/12. Started folfox 7/24/12. Added avastin 8/27/12. CT 12/27/12 still showing shrink. Took 17 rounds of FOLFOX. Then 5-FU + Avastin. Switched to Irinotecan for 1 yr. CEA rose to >400. Switched to Vectibix 2/18/15. CEA decreasing. Scans show some growth in liver mets. Lung Mets stable to shrinking.

You're right, it can change depending on if you are the driver or passenger. Better to get the one you think will be most beneficial. I am a single mom and drive myself back and forth to chemo and doc appointments, as well as driving kids everywhere, so it was a no brainer for me. :)

They didn't give me an option. I really hate the thing.

Since they implanted the hockey puck-sized HAI pump in my belly, I don't even think about my port anymore. It's all about perspective.

Just a thought, but there's a lambs wool seat belt cover to put on the strap to protect the port...they're about $10.. Check Walmart, Target in the automotive sections. I got my Dad's at the car wash! Good luck with your treatments...
Dad's bowel resection 4/10/15
Stage IIIC; Chemo "cocktail" to start 5/15
Canceled due to PET scan results 5/15
Lung Biopsy 5/21-lung surgery 6/4/15
Started Avastin 7/15 for lungs...ignore colon
Colon surgery 11/16 again.. :(
Clot in port..new port installed 2/17
5-FU pump, Avastin, Oxaliplatin started 2/17...and here we go again.

Very sore shoulder for 24 hours and now feeling pretty good. DH drives so it's a good thing it's on his right side. Chemo starts on the 15th. Thanks everyone.

PS. I'm reading Tom Brokaw's new book about his experience with cancer. Let you know what I think.
