Diet with ileostomy

Postby cathy123 » Fri May 15, 2015 9:40 am

Can anyone give me advice on what is really ok to eat? I feel like I see conflicting advice. The surgeon first said go by what the hospital sent home with you (which was the very restrictive low residue diet), then said but definitely no corn or raw onions. Ostomy nurse was kind of vague. I have seen some places that say you should be able to eat most anything.

I have about 4 more months til reversal - I plan to stay away from raw veggies, nuts, peels. But can I add some whole grain bread, fresh fruits other than bananas, etc in moderation without risking a blockage?

Thanks!

My husband has had his ileo for seven months now. I believe the only foods he has avoided completely are popcorn, corn, celery, kale and apple/potato peels. He has not had any trouble with sprouted seven-grain bread. Does eat nuts occasionally but is careful to chew them very thoroughly. I asked him if some of the higher-residue foods like grains/greens give him any trouble; he said they don't make him feel crampy or sick but they clearly don't digest as well as he can identify them when he empties the bag later

I have had my ileostomy for almost a year. I eat anything I want. I have had some cramping a couple of times, once when I ate too much raw spinach and once with too many grapes.both times it was resolved by drinking a big glass of water. I think that for me, chewing really well and drinking enough liquids with and after I eat is key. I don't digest some things very well, and I never seem to be hydrated enough, but I have mostly been able to maintain my weight. I think you really just have to go slow, chew carefully, and drink enough liquids, and watch what your saying body tells you.

Thanks so much - that is what I was hoping to hear. I'm not going to sit down to a veggie platter but I feel better about eating a few strawberries and watermelon this summer.

My DH has illeostomy (for 12 years). He basically eats everything except for corn, nuts, seeds. I think it is a trial & error.
