Article: RFA for Treatment of Lung Metastases

Postby ConnieSPK » Fri Feb 27, 2015 2:19 pm

Ran across this article from an email today. Funny, was just discussing RFA here yesterday.....maybe it's an omen :D
The paragraph below is from a site called Practice Update. The study article, itself is here (hope the link works, haven't had good luck with that) http://annonc.oxfordjournals.org/conten ... 7.abstract

"TAKE-HOME MESSAGE

This prospective study examined the efficacy of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of lung metastases in 566 patients. Patients had one to eight metastases, which were unilateral (75%) or bilateral (25%), with a median diameter of 1.5 cm. Patients were treated with RFA safely up to four times. The median overall survival after RFA was 62 months, and it was associated with primary origin, disease-free interval, and the size and number of metastases. Lower progression-free survival was associated with metastases larger than 2 cm, rectal primary tumor, number of metastases, and extra pulmonary disease. In a subpopulation of 293 patients with colorectal metastases, the size (>2 cm) and number of metastases were each significantly associated with overall survival. RFA treatment resulted in a 53.7% 3-year and a 44.1% 4-year control rate of lung metastatic disease. RFA may be a valuable treatment option for small lung metastases, particularly those that are 2 to 3 cm."
