Fruit Fly Study at Mount Sinai (NYC)

Postby Julie YW » Wed Feb 18, 2015 6:14 pm

Has anyone here looked into the fruit fly study at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City? It's received a fair amount of press and was the subject of an Esquire magazine article featuring Stephanie Lee (CRC patient who has since died). It involves the breeding of fruit flies with your tumor and assaulting the thousands of fruit flies with all FDA approved drugs to come up with a cocktail that is specific to you. I've heard of this being done in mice but fruit flies have the advantage of being cheaper, faster and more plentiful. My HIPEC surgeon set up a meeting for me with the doctor heading up the CRC portion of the study tomorrow so I will learn more very soon. Just wondering if anyone knows anything about it.

I've heard about it briefly but don't know much. I'll be interested in hearing your perspective after your meeting.

Take a look at this link.

We talked about this about a year ago when a lot of press about it came out. I don't know if we will ever find out how successful this is overall since there would be no way to compare it to conventional therapy. I hope this is a good option for you and they are able to taylor treatment for you. Personally I think this is very promising, though unfortunately not likely something that can be done in useful numbers. It's expensive, and very labor intensive. I don't believe the economics of it will scale such that this could be applied to everyone.

Good luck to you.

The report is: you need to have a tumor that can be biopsied and from which ideally 1 gram of malignant tissue can be extracted. The process takes 6-9 months. The cocktail that they come up for you (if there is one) can be administered at your choosing if you have failed at least 2 standard treatments. All costs are covered by the study. You tumor will also be subject to the BIG DATA analysis. I do not qualify because I don't have a big enough tumor. The study is also at a stand-still at the moment because the genetics counselor who was vital to the study left and they're trying to find a replacement ASAP.
