xeloda cost. holy beans.

Postby Sleen » Mon Feb 16, 2015 8:15 pm

I'm going to be going on xeloda in a couple of weeks (2 wks on / 1 wk off). The pharmacy called and told me that one "fill" (3 wk supply, which for me would be 98 pills) was going to cost me $890. Insurance was covering $3,000, leaving $890 for me to cover. I nearly fainted.

How are people affording this!?!

She called my oncologist while I was still on the line and onc. agreed that generic is fine. That will cost me only $10 per 3wk supply. whew.

Hopefully your insurance has an out of pocket max. Or I used the Genentech copay card ended up costing me 8.00 a month

Celine: yikes! That's a lot of money. I paid $125 copayment every cycle. So it was $1000 for the total 8 cycles. I hope that you will be able to get some financial assistance through Genentech.

Small comfort, but several years ago people here were quoting $6000-$9000 per month for their Xeloda treatments. Generic capecitabine pills in India are under $2 per 500 mg, so there is still room for improvement.

No documented reason to take Xeloda in lieu of generic. The generic that I took was made by Teva Pharmaceuticals which is an Israeli company and the world's largest manufacturer of generic drugs. I am not too keen on putting anything in my body that is made in India or China.

When I was trying to decide if I was going to do Xeloda or not the head nurse said that we should see if my insurance would cover it. When I asked how much it would be for me to pay for it without insurance's help and she said, "You can't afford it." She was right!
I'm just a dude who still can't believe he had a resection and went through chemo (currently 13 years NED). Is this real life?

Carolinabluetec that is good to know!

Once I reached my deductible I ended up with red carpet treatment. Last several months of the year I paid nothing. Not even copays on regular drugs. Maybe you will need to just reach your deductible? I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

I just received my EOB from my ins co and they paid just under 5k for my 14 day supply  for that price they should come with a guarantee

I paid zero. We should think about the high costs of goods and sevices the next time we're whining about our premiums.

Insurance is weird. My Xeloda (actually, the generic) is costing me a lot less than the Oxilaplatin. $50/mo for the Xeloda vs. $144 per infusion for the Oxi.

Newbie here. Just adding my experience as reference. Doctor just called to confirm my copay for 4 weeks of Xeloda (I need 5-6 but they submitted 4 weeks to start to insurance) is $438. It is more than I expected and it will take several days to try to get any assistance/co pay card so I will pay out of pocket in order to avoid a delay in my treatment schedule. :?
