So sorry you're having such a hard time with chemo. (FOLFOX, right?) I had my surgery first, went to ER thinking I had appendicitis & discovered a tumor & that a large section of my colon was so distended and inflamed that surgeon said it was coming apart in her hands. Anyway, had to heal from surgery & temporary colostomy, then colostomy take down before I could start chemo. It was 3 months before I could start chemo & I had 11 rounds. It was really hard but I did it and learned a lot. Some tips you may want to ask your onc about:
Reduced the dosage to 80% because the first round knocked me on my a$$. Still effective, less side effects.
Had the calcium & magnesium from day one - no twitches, cramps, etc.
Onc added 2 hours of hydration at disconnect, then later added another 2 hours before infusion. Helps reduce side effects & I felt much better. They said IV hydro beats drinking fluids hands down.
At first the steroids kept me awake for 48 hours; that got better with each tx & by the fifth round it was gone.
If your white count goes down you may need shots to raise it. I had Neulasta (1 shot at disco) & thank goodness Bev told me to take Claratin D to prevent bone pain. It works!! My first onc didn't know anything about it, my current onc had recently heard of it & said go ahead. Has to be the "D", not plain Claratin.
My energy level went down with each round until I couldn't even get dressed or bathe. They gave me Ritalin to help because my quality of life was impacted so much. It helped but not in a huge way.
They cancelled my 12th round completely because chemo was so hard on me. Onc said the dosage level and the number of rounds are a range and not written in stone.
Hope you can use some of this info & I wish you the best of luck. I had to keep telling myself that it wasn't forever & that I could do anything 12 times. Let's hope I never need chemo again!! I see people who are on chemo for life & wonder how they do it. Stay strong and lean on the group here. You are not alone. Hugs, XXOXO, Delinda
