Allergic Reaction At Treatment Time

Postby meatie » Wed Jan 28, 2015 6:31 pm

Slightly off topic, but this is what went down yesterday at the treatment:

My mother had her eighth treatment yesterday. During the infusion, she had a allergic reaction and her temperature and blood pressure spiked to 101F and 170/100 mmHg. The nurses then stopped the infusion and gave her a couple of "emergency medicine" shots and told us to wait half an hour to see what happens. The half hour came and went. My mother's skin redness went down and her temp + blood pressure returned somewhat to normal. The infusion was then continued without further excitement and finished just before 6 pm (we arrived at the treatment at 8 am in the morning). A "routine" treatment supposed to end in early afternoon turned into a tense 10-hour marathon.

Anyone had a allergy reaction like this at the treatment center?

I had reaction every treatment. Big giant red hives all the time. Not as bad as your mom though. They started to give me Benadryl before each treatment. I did not have the high blood pressure either.

But my mother didn't have any major allergic reactions during previous treatments. Could it really be the cumulative-ness of chemo?

I think it could be ,now that I think about I did not have hives on the first two treatments. I had them every treatment after that.

I had no reaction to Xeloda until the 4th round when I developed a skin rash to go along with HFS.

I had several allergic reactions on FOLFOX. The first one was after the 3rd treatment. I had itching burning hives all over my body for two days. They eventually went away and I took lots of Benadryl. The second was a bright red rash at 5am the morning of my 11th round of chemo. The team saw my rash but didn't think it was too concerning. Then when I started chemo, the rash spread like wildfire all over my body and I became very hot. They stopped the Oxali, took my blood pressure/temp/pulse about 17 times, gave me more Decadron, and kept me there all day for monitoring. The doc said I wouldn't receive any more Oxali after that, so I made it through 11 rounds which is pretty good from what I understand. The rash got worse the next day, so they prescribed a Prednisone pack to me. It eventually calmed down, but I have never itched and burned so bad in my life. And I was on a steroid high for a week.... got LOTS of stuff done. LOL

During my 7th infusion I had a reaction. It was the second treatment after my liver resection. My sister was with me and about 1 minute after Oxali started infusing I had a very metallic taste in my mouth. It felt so different from the previous infusions and I asked my sister to get the nurse. I was unconscious before they returned (probably 10 seconds later). I apparently had a cardiac arrest and two shots of epinephrine and shock brought me back. I was unconscious for 45 minutes and when I woke they transported me to the cardiac unit at Columbia for 2 days observation. I had no residual heart issues from that episode and doctors there were surprised I had no damage done from the event.

I had no further Oxali infusions.

My oncologist told me that sensitivity to Oxali can become more pronounced after multiple infusions.

I think my episode is pretty rare (the extent of my reaction) but I would counsel that you remain with her throughout infusion. I am so glad my sister was with me and able to get help. Nurses check in all the time but I wonder what a couple minute dealt would have resulted in.

I developed a reaction beginning after 6 FOLFOX cycles. It did not happen until 24 hrs after the infusion. The symptoms were that could not breathe for a short period of time. It became progressively on the next two infusions and I had to stop after 8 cycles. So yes, the reaction can become progressively worse with each infusion.
