My Cancer anthem. What is yours??

Postby skypup » Fri Jan 23, 2015 11:50 am

This is my fist-in-the-air anthem against cancer and I think of us on this forum when I hear it (or scream it out in the *privacy* of my car  .)

I can't quite explain it, but I really need to know yours, too!

"Badlands"

Lights out tonight,
Trouble in the heartland,
Got a head on collision,
Smashin' in my guts, man
,
I'm caught in a cross fire,
That I don't understand.

I don't give a damn,
for the same old played out scenes,
I don't give a damn,
for just the in betweens,
Honey, I want the heart, I want the soul,
I want control right now

Talk about a dream,
try to make it real
You wake up in the night,
with a fear so real
,

Spend your life waiting,
for a moment that just don't come,
Well, don't waste your time waiting,

Badlands, you gotta live it everyday,
Let the broken hearts stand
As the price you've gotta pay,

We'll keep pushin' till it's understood,
and these badlands start treating us good.

Workin' in the fields
till you get your back burned,
Workin' 'neath the wheel
till you get your facts learned,
Baby, I got my facts
learned real good right now.

Poor man wanna be rich,
rich man wanna be king,
And a king ain't satisfied,
till he rules everything,
I wanna go out tonight,
I wanna find out what I got

I believe in the love that you gave me,
I believe in the hope that can save me,
I believe in the faith
and I pray, that someday it may raise me,
Above these badlands

Badlands, you gotta live it everyday,
Let the broken hearts stand
As the price you've gotta pay,
We'll keep pushin' till it's understood,
and these badlands start treating us good.

For the ones who had a notion,
A notion deep inside,
That it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive

I wanna find one face that ain't looking through me
I wanna find one place,
I wanna spit in the face of these badlands

Badlands, you gotta live it everyday,
Let the broken hearts stand
As the price you've gotta pay,
We'll keep pushin' till it's understood,
and these badlands start treating us good.

Anything by Morrissey / The Smiths, but this song in particular...

Still Ill - The Smiths

I decree today that life is simply taking and not giving
England is mine and it owes me a living
ask me why and I'll spit in your eye
ask me why and I'll spit in your eye

But we cannot cling
to our old dreams anymore.
no, we cannot cling
to those dreams

Does the body rule the mind
or does the mind rule the body?
I dunno...

Under the iron bridge we kissed
and although I ended up with sore lips
it just wasn't like
the old days anymore
no it wasn't like those days
am I still ill?
am I still ill?

Does the body rule the mind
or does the mind rule the body?
I dunno...

Ask me why and I'll die
oh ask me why and I'll die
and if you must go to work tomorrow
well if I were you I wouldn't bother
for there are brighter sides to life
and I should know because I've seen them
but not very often

Under the iron bridge we kissed
and although I ended up with sore lips
it just wasn't like
the old days anymore
no it wasn't like those days
am I still ill?
am I still ill?

Ah Bruce Springsteen. I think Badass should replace Badlands
My son's was anything hard rock and loud. Especially on infusion days cause there was a guy who would snore and peel the paint off the wall when he was there. Hehe

"Don't Stop ... Believin' " - Journey
altho' the Glee cast did a moving version which backdropped starbuck30's memorial video tribute.

BUTT depending upon my mood ...
I also find some kind of perverse solace in Terry Jacks' version of "Seasons In The Sun" - Jacques Brel / lyrics Rod McKuen

I love all of the classic rock and grew up on it as a kid until I discovered Black Sabbath. Since then I have always loved metal and I mean the real heavy stuff (I used to play in a thrash band in the 80's). So for me it is anything angry and heavy played VERY loud!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I had to choose a song, I might choose Rocket Man by Elton John. We now live in a different world from everybody else. And when treatment ends, we are still cancer patients and still different from everybody else. We are Rocket Wo/Men.

My current favorite song is "Dreams" by the Allman Bros. It's a song about a guy who overcomes depression. I kind of liken that to overcoming my fear of dying. Very soulful and a very heavy, intense groove.

Here's a live version recorded at the Beacon Theater in NYC.

In the waiting room. So I got in the car to come and what was playing but Badlands, only thanks to exaussie all I heard was Badass! Perfect!
Rob, your songs have a lousy melody but fantastic lyrics!
Andrew, I don't know the song but will listen when I get home. Does the body rule the mind indeed...
CR, never would have pegged you for a Journey man, but the sentiment is pure you. Especially combined with the skew of Seasons in the Sun. Showing my age, but I remember the original. Will listen to the one you like.
Jeff, cancer can deserve loud and angry, for sure.
Don, "out here alone"... Understand...
BB, I always loved Allman Bros (Memory of Elizabeth Reed!) and can't believe I can't recall Dreams. Will listen when I get home.
Pollo, I love the image!!!! And she gets home to her pot plants! Hehehe

Thanks, everyone for sharing. I am finding it comforting. Community. :)

I played Step by Step by Whitney Houston while on chemo and still play it in my car today.....because the journey is not over.

Well, there's a bridge and there's a river
That I still must cross
As I'm going on my journey
Oh, I might be lost

And there's a road I have to follow
A place I have to go
Well, no one told me just how to get there
But when I get there I'll know 'cause I'm taking it

Step by step, bit by bit
Stone by stone, yeah, brick by brick
Step by step, day by day
Mile by mile

And this old road is rough and ruin
So many dangers along the way
So many burdens might fall upon me
So many troubles that I have to face

Oh, but I won't let my spirit fail me
Oh, I won't let my spirit go
Until I get to my destination
I'm gonna take it slow because I'm making in a

Step by step, bit by bit
Stone by stone, yeah, brick by brick
Step by step, day by day
Mile by mile, go your way, go your way

Say baby, don't give up
You've got to hold on to what you've got
Oh, baby, don't give up
You've go to keep on moving, don't stop, yeah, yeah

I know you're hurting
And I know you're blue
I know you're hurting
But don't let the bad things get to you, I'm taking it

Step by step, bit by bit
Stone by stone, yeah, brick by brick
Step by step, day by day
Mile by mile, go your way, go your way

I'm takin' it step by step, bit by bit
Stone by stone, yeah, brick by brick
Step by step, day by day
Mile by mile, go your way, go your way

Bit by bit
