pump disconnect kit from mskcc

Postby midlifemom » Thu Jan 22, 2015 3:05 pm

Quick question for the mskcc crowd out there, although open to others.

I will be beginning folfiri next week at mskcc with the 46 hour pump, which is no big deal for me. I was asked who would be disconnecting the pump, to which I requested if I could since I had done so in the past. I was told that was ok but that I would have to purchase disconnect kits/supplies from mskcc pharmacy. This was a shocker to me since all those supplies, and extras, had been provided to me at no charge at Fox Chase. (Not realizing they would cost in the future, I donated all those extra supplies to an animal shelter.)
Anyway, can someone just give me a heads up on approximate cost for these supplies? I can't count on insurance picking up the cost.

Interesting, I disconnected my self at home, but I never had to pay for supplies, they were given to me, lots of them, maybe an insurance issue? In fact I think I still have a lot of them left, I'll have to look. I would gladly send them to you if you'd like. Just PM me.

My mom had to do something alike, but with the HAI pump flush ki, which I believe is a little similar to the 48 h pump. It was about 30 dollars. She had to pick it up at the MSKC pharmacy. They billed the insurance after my mom picked it up. Maybe yours will have a similar process.

I also disconnected at home and never had to pay for the supplies. That should be included with the cost of your pump. Is it a separate company that supplies the pump? Ask them

I did FOLFOX at MSKCC's satellite center in Commack. They gave me a prescription for the disconnect supplies, and I filled it at my own pharmacy. I paid my usual copay.

I just want to point out is that it's the chest port flush procedure that we are talking about here, not the HAI pump refill which HAS to be done at the hospital, it's not something that any one can do.

Yes- the port disconnect using saline and heparin.

Speaking of port flushing, now THAT'S something I wish I could do at home. I'm assuming no one gets to access and flush off-site, right?

Just fyi. Haven't examined my 'kit' yet but I believe it's good for 10 disconnects.
They ran it through my 2014 insurance which priced it at $16, my copay being $1.60.
However, my 2015 insurance isn't as good so might have cost a bit more.
