I no longer consider the Inst. of Medicine a scientifically credible organization. That last D report just boiled my blood with self-interests, incompetence and thinly covered corruptions that further delay recognizable progress where a lot of known research has been unfinished, and largely unstarted, for 50-60 yrs. About all I can say nice is that it made 4000 iu caps slightly better protected legally if one of the anti-DSHEA laws ever passed; the report also recognized (wrong) blood levels as an alternative basis of discussion for daily augmentation rather than just RDA (remember 200-400 iu of D2 as a basis of adequate nutrition or "quackery" discussions?).

This VitaminDWiki advocacy site looks useful to me.

I have a serious vitamin D deficiency and I had to insist to my oncologist we do something about it. He said "That is the least of your problems". Direct quote. I told him it is still a problem and needed to be addressed so he prescribed those 50,000 unit D pills I take once a week. Will see soon how my levels are doing.

Just had my level checked and squeaked across the line at 30. I've been on 5K units for 3 years. I'm going to discuss raising it with my Dr.
Male Age 53. Dx CC with numerous liver mets 6/23/12. Colon res 6/24/12. Started folfox 7/24/12. Added avastin 8/27/12. CT 12/27/12 still showing shrink. Took 17 rounds of FOLFOX. Then 5-FU + Avastin. Switched to Irinotecan for 1 yr. CEA rose to >400. Switched to Vectibix 2/18/15. CEA decreasing. Scans show some growth in liver mets. Lung Mets stable to shrinking.

My number by the way was 11. They didn't list the units it's measured in.

Units, Bad (=11 ng/ml) and Worse (11 nmol/L=4.4 ng/ml). Maybe they're too embarrassed to tell. This iatrogenic pandemic is an (inter)national scandal, generations in the making. Been there, done that.

Also: The Vitamin D Council, the work of Dr. John J. Cannell, nonprofit organization, working to educate the public on vitamin D, sun exposure and health. If it's about Vitamin D, it'll be there.

If you go to Health Conditions and choose Colorectal Cancer, for example, you have an updated text about it, with a bibliography at the end.

Are Vitamin D levels checked in the normal course of getting blood work done? Or do I have to specifically ask to check them?

My pcp started me on vitamin d3 after chemo ,she checks my levels every three to six months when it gets low she makes me double up for about a month. I take 2000iu every day. I went el cheapo once and bought a Walmart brand took them every day ,my levels went down and she asked me if I was taking my d3 ,yes I said. Never going to get cheap vitamins again!

I find the whole 50,000 units once a week odd but it seems it is standard for really low levels. Wish I would have had this tested sooner

Are your d3 levels going up? Thats a high dose , maybe doc wants them to pick up fast then when numbers look better you'll go on a regular dosage. Hope it works.

50,000 iu per week = 7143 iu per day. There have been a lot of CRC people on the boards that needed 10,000+ iu of D3 per day to have normal or optimal blood levels. Especially while on chemo and short on the other major bone requirements like vitamin K2 and magnesium; maybe calcium, boron, silica, and collagen building blocks. Long term chemo patients losing teeth and breaking bones, are commonplaces if you don't get the needed chemistry.

Very interesting ! I guess that's why my teeth are breaking! Magnesium gives me diarrhea , so I can only take it occasionally . I take it when I'm constipated. To bad onc didn't check levels while on chemo maybe my wbc wouldn't have gotten so low.

I've read several places that K2 is essential for the absorption of D3. I take a K2 supplement -- 45 mcg, I think.

I've taken either Walmart or Sam's brand D3 for a couple of years. My initial D level was 30 -- came up to almost 70 while taking 6000 to 8000 IU per day. Wanting to get ABOVE 70, I've upped my D3 to 10,000 IU per day. All of my docs have seen this on my med list and none have said a word about lowering or discontinuing.
