Curious, my first D3 reading was 19 and I live in the deep south. Took 2,000 IU's and got it up to 37 so tried 6,000 IU and got it to 100 - 101 ish. When I first started it 5 1/2 years ago my onc said 'you're wasting your money'. Now he says 'You ARE taking Vit D3, right? That's very important!'

UPDATED: Higher Vitamin D levels and colorectal cancer survival

Postby Maia » Sun May 31, 2015 1:23 pm

UPDATE May 31th 2015, from onging ASCO 2015 this weekend:

******************************

Higher Vitamin D Levels Linked to Improved Colorectal Cancer Survival

News | May 31, 2015 | ASCO 2015 Colorectal Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, ASCO 2015

Increased concentrations of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were associated with significantly improved overall survival rates in a group of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer treated as part of the phase III Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB)/Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) 80405 trial.

Kimmie Ng, MD, MPH, of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, presented results from the trial (abstract 3503), which showed a 7-month improvement in median overall survival among patients with the highest quintile of vitamin D concentrations, at the 2015 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting held May 29 to June 2 in Chicago.

Higher vitamin D levels were associated with a significantly improved overall and progression-free survival, and this association persisted across all subgroups examined and even after adjusting for multiple prognostic factors,” Ng said. “A phase II randomized trial to evaluate the impact of vitamin D in conjunction with chemotherapy is currently ongoing.”

According to Ng, previous research has shown that vitamin D inhibits cell proliferation and angiogenesis and induces cell differentiation and apoptosis, as well as having anti-inflammatory effects.

My Nephrologist put me on it the first time I saw her. But she only wants me to take enough that my levels are within the normal range. The last check it was 30, the bottom of the range for my lab. I feel I need more.
Male Age 53. Dx CC with numerous liver mets 6/23/12. Colon res 6/24/12. Started folfox 7/24/12. Added avastin 8/27/12. CT 12/27/12 still showing shrink. Took 17 rounds of FOLFOX. Then 5-FU + Avastin. Switched to Irinotecan for 1 yr. CEA rose to >400. Switched to Vectibix 2/18/15. CEA decreasing. Scans show some growth in liver mets. Lung Mets stable to shrinking.

What I personally did was check my blood levels and I take a supplement dose where I hit the top end of the normal range. The test is cheap and my oncologist was on board helping me check-

I've mentioned before in addition to the CRC, I had gastric bypass (gbp) back in 2007 (dx with CRC in 2013). One of the vitamins that gbp patients malabsorb is vitamin D, and it wasn't until after the CRC diagnosis that my endocrinologist put me on a high-dose vitamin D therapy to help with my diabeites.

That said, high serum vitamin D levels can also have negative effects, so anyone considering adding vitamin D should do so under a doctor's supervision and monitoring. This is a fat soluable vitamin, and not water soluable (so the body passes excess).

But I'm glad to see more research going into this area.

Interesting. My son's level.was 11 at diagnoses. We had my daughter checked for health reasons at that time and she was 9. Pacific northwest is not quite the sun capital of the world! We got a sauna with uv lights and everyone tales 10000 MG a day just to stay in normal range. I wonder if genetics plays a part in absorption of d3

Good to know! My levels were low when I was first diagnosed. I take 4000 UI's a day. I specifically asked my primary physician to measure my vitamin D levels during a physical and my level came back normal.
I'm just a dude who still can't believe he had a resection and went through chemo (currently 13 years NED). Is this real life?

My doctor put me on Vit D at the time of my diagnose. I was taking 1,000 mg a day when I ran out. So I went to get some more and even though I reached for 1,000 mg. It wasn't until after a month of taking them that I realized they were 5,000 mg. 35,0000 a week, I swear I thought I was going to die!! I never said anything to my doctor about what happened, I figured my blood work would let her know. She never said a word, I'm back to 1,000 and she has mentioned I should reduce my intake to 500 over these last 6 months. I haven't done it yet...though my readings have been in the 90's

I was taking 6,000IU a day this winter and my level was still only 50. I recently upped it to 7,000IU/daily but am wondering now if I should take even more...

My onc recommended D supplements for post treatment recurrence prevention. I have no idea what my levels were, but I live in Arizona and have to constantly hide from the sun so I doubt mine was low.

How do you get your Vitamin D level checked?
47 y/o; mom to 5,7,16,18 and 20 y/o
4/20/15 had first scope as recommended by OB/gyn due to family history with large mass found at splenic flexure
unable to pass and see the remaining 2/3 of colon
4/22/15 cancer confirmed, MSS, had genetic testing-all negative!
node in lungs, cysts in liver and kidneys ??all benign we hope
5/12/15 left hemicolectomy laprascopically
