Medical Oncologist appointment January 12th

Postby DarknessEmbraced » Thu Jan 08, 2015 10:21 am

I called my surgeon's office to ask how long it takes to get an appointment with the medical oncologist. She said she didn't know but she gave me the oncology department phone number. I was put through to the oncologist's secretary. As I was talking to her on the phone a stack of referrals was placed on her desk, mine was among them. She gave me an appointment for this Monday, January 12th at 8:30am. She said to bring all of my medications with me and to arrive five minutes early to fill out a questionnaire. I'll be taking a taxi both ways because we don't own a vehicle. I'm glad that I called because his secretary said he was booked up all next week except for Monday morning.

Good luck.

Perhaps folks can weigh in on what to expect and what to bring?

I suggest bringing a pen and a notebook - one where you record notes from all appointments, and a folder to collect the papers they give you.

I suggest you bring a friend or family member who can listen with you and help you remember what you heard.

I advise that "warm and friendly" might make you feel taken care of, but it is not a synonym for "giving good and complete information." Hiring an oncologist is something you've never done. I also advise you get a second opinion, if for no other reason than to hear everything twice and to insure that you have enough info to reflect on whether the oncologist is a good one.

I wish you luck. It will be a tough day, but it will feel like progress.
