TammyLayne helped me bring hubby to relief. I can never thank her enough.
DH was 4-5 months out of reversal and absolutely miserable. With Tammylayne's detailed guidelines, he has now developed his morning routine and more often than not--a before bed routine.

He has an "Im afraid if I don't do it, I will be miserable and wish I had" frame of mind.

Our Onc and Surgeon do not have an issue with him doing the "flushes" as we call them. This may be Billy's situation that its okay (I don't want anyone to think it is an across the board patient "okay")

Also, Billy has a Swiss Cheese Abdomin. Meaning massive scar tissue. This, I believe, causes his bowels to have limited catepillar movement. The crap just sits. So. .. . he flushes it out.

And finally, Billy (my DH) does it regularly because he is absolutely terrified of another SBO. The NG tube thoughts are in his nightmares.

Good luck to you.

I feel like Tammylayne about having freedom from bathroom worries. A BM for me without an enema takes multiple trips over several hours. It would be nice to have normal BMs but that isn't realistic in my case. Regan, your husband sounds like me. I have had an SBO that needed surgically repaired. Adhesions do hinder my colon movement like your husband so I am glad for enemas.

Kenny, I understand your not wanting to spend your life tied to the crapper.

Laura, I didn't do one today and about ten the fun started. So I did the enema and I'm done.

From the beginning my surgeon who reconnected me said it was a very low connect and could be challenging for me. She mentioned her patients who'd done the enemas so they could just get on with it. I guess I've been open to them since that time. To me it's better than an ostomy.

I'm worried about getting a scan next week and the potential for shatting myself on the table

My connect is very low as well (4 cm above the anal verge, I believe) and my surgeon said the same thing. I agree that enemas let me "get on with it" and that the routine is better than the ostomy.

I've done a number of scans since starting the enema routine and never had that problem, although it has been uncomfortable at times.

I have been using Linzess 145mg and it works great for me. I have IBSc and this medication has really improved my system.

You just have to find the best time of your day to take it as it works in about an hour if taken in the morning. No way to stop during rush hour and working.

So I take it about 3:30 or 4 pm and eat a normal dinner at 5 o 6 and by 8 pm it's all systems go... no pain or strain. My gut is so much better... no bloating and that backed up feeling anymore.

Wonder why surgeons don't prescribe this more... actually my GI doctor and PCP recommended it for IBSc and said to stay off the laxatives I was using daily... also added a couple of fiber pills.

This might do the trick for you too.

Chrissy, I have wondered about Linzess since my colon seems so inert but since I've had bowel obstructions and know I have adhesions, I've wondered if it is contraindicated. My experience with laxatives and prune juice so far has been that it can still take 4 hours to get cleaned out. But I could always ask my doc, sounds like a good system for you.

Thanks for the info. (Merry Christmas:)

kennyt-wisted,
I am having a love affair with Chet, my bio-bidet. He's gorgeous and gentle with the ass-action.

Kenny, do you mean more people would want to do them? It is an amazing amount of crap that comes out of a successful enema.

All I know is I have eaten anything and EVERYTHING this holiday season,,,and no problems...no issues. Do my thing every morning and I am good to go, and I feel GOOD...no Full, bloating, not emptied feeling.

The odd day that I have been late doing it over the past year...or skipped it cause I didnt want to take the time, I actually found myself "missing" it, or I should say missing the totally empty feeling that comes with it.

Starting to think I should attitude enemas to my gratitude thread

I had an enema fail. I bought a disposable kit. 1000cc tap water, checked with thermometer. On my left side. It was running out as it was running in. Geez, I thought I had better control than that! So I sat on the toilet just to see if I could clench enough to hold it in. Yep, I could. So I don't know what I was doing when I was lying down and yes, I'm sure the tubing was in far enough. But what alarmed me was when I took the tubing out, about an inch or two of bloody water was in the end of the tubing. Maybe enemas aren't for me
