O/T Be extra careful, friends

Postby Bev G » Sun Dec 14, 2014 8:05 pm

Somewhat off topic, but not totally. Those of us with neuropathy can have our balance out of whack pretty easily. Within the last 12 hours I've had two really scary near misses. Well, one was not a miss, it was a hit. I had to get up during the night and sort of tripped on my worst foot, which now has foot drop. I stumbled and literally missed going through my sliding glass door in my room by about an inch. Had I not had the door frame to grab, i think I would have been a sparkly glass and blood covered Christmas ornament buried in 2 feet of Vermont snow. I had so much adrenalin from that very close call that I was awake and drowning in adrenalin for hours.

Next, this morning we were going out to brunch. It's our 20th anniversary. My husband "forgot" to put salt on our front ramp. I fell, and I fell really hard on my head. Pretty sure I looked like a cartoon Bev as my feet flew up in front of me and I just came down, head first. Was thinking about going to the ER to make sure I hadn't fractured my skull (it felt like a hard enough fall to do that) or developed a subdural hematoma, but other than my back and already broken ankle hurting, I have a bad headache but no weird level of consciousness or anything like that. Plus, I have a neurologist appointment in the morning and she can probably check it out a bit for me.

Anyhow, everyone, especially those of you who can't particularly feel your feet and get off balance; please when it comes to Winter ice, etc, expect the worst and be EXTRA careful. It's amazing how well much of our bodies were made to protect us. When those mechanisms break down, we are at substantial risk.

Be well, all of you! 8) 8) 8)

Love and Happy Holidays.

Dear Bev
Why you? You just stated 2 very good reasons I live in Houston in a 1 story house. Rarely snows, and no stairs or ramp. Comes in handy, considering my lifestyle  Were you on your way to McCormick and Schmitt ? I know it is one of your favorite restaurants? Anyway, a few hydrocodone, will help you tomorrow, and try not to go ice skating, without kneepads.(and a helmet)
Regards, Michael
I hope this didn't put too much of a damper on your anniversary

Happy Anniversary :D Sorry that your getting new owies - you've had enough over the last year you don't need new ones. You should get some of those cartoon character bandaids so at least you have something to smile about when you look at your owies. kgd

   Thanks, and yes I should. I got Steve some Steelers bandaids for Christmas. He hasn't seen them yet. Maybe I'll put one on my newly discovered banged up knee and he'll be so jealous. LOL

I think the neuropathy brigade constantly need reminding that we are basically unstable. I went fishing a couple of weeks ago. Sitting in a small aluminium tinny for several hours does nothing for neuropathy. It was very windy and not much fish so I decided to pull the pin and go home. Their was quite a line up back at the boat ramp so I got out of the boat to stretch my legs. It was nice firm sand , no mud and good footing so I promptly fell A over T into the mangroves. I got up only to repeat the procedure. I sat on the front of the boat and waited till everyone had finished then very carefully got the boat out, fortunately I fitted an electric winch or I would still be there. Ron. PS not one of the boaties present bothered to check if I was ok.

Dear Bev, I hope you did tell the neurologist about your fall and that everything is okay. Neuropathy in my feet has never gotten better and I find I really have to slow things down or I am on my way to the floor. Stairs are really hard for me...

Be careful out there, dear lady.

And thank you for reminding us to be extra careful with our feet. I've notice with the cold weather mine feel worst. When getting up during the night, my feet feel like they are melting into the floor. Please be very careful...

Glad you are ok Bev. I actually went over to my mom's house and helped her decorate the tree for that reason because someone had to get on the step stool and it wasn't going to be here. I had visions of her falling in the tree. Dad was working so if I didn't go she was going to do it on her own. I always like decorating with her anyway.
