This is not directed at any poster, just thought I should also highlight the fact not all people who identify as Christians are opposed to euthanasia.

Anecdotal; my family (immediate and extended) are what I would term conservative Christians. No drinking, swearing, sex before marriage, or any of that other fun stuff. Pure in body, pure in spirit - etc. Most people think they're fairly strange.

Despite this strong dedication to their faith, my father and his siblings with whom I have discussed the issue, are all in favour of legally available assisted suicide for the terminally ill.

Incidentally, they are a family of doctors. And my paternal grandfather (a missionary doctor) passed at the age of 60, of bowel cancer. I never met him as I was born the same year, yet we seem to have formed a connection of sorts 31 years later.

Just pointing out this is not simply a Christian vs non-Christian debate, regardless of the main posters' backgrounds. :)

True enough, thanks NZJay. I was trying to make a quick, limited point about Boer's extreme bias, and in the back of my mind were all the severe religious judgments against Brittany Maynard. Of course many Christians have embraced death with dignity in Oregon as well as the (very different) euthanasia statutes in the Netherlands.

Had no idea he was a Christian. Just saw that he was involved and in favor of the Netherlands law in the beginning but now is against it.

The moderate path is the hallmark of Civilization and there will always be two extreme opinions.
However the pendulum of collective wisdom swings to ends but it's natural state is the middle way.
Oregon law and Netherlands law could become the de facto standards 100 years from now.

An example is Auto Industry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mo ... S._by_year

Since autos have been invented, the number of deaths in auto accidents have increased. From 26 to 30K plus now.
So there are 3 choices here:

(a) All autos are banned, everyone goes back to Horse drawn carriages and significant number of lives are saved(Much more than Oregon assisted suicide law)
Fatalities drop back to single digits)
(b) There is a Speed limit on Autos(65 MPH) so fatalities in most cases do not result in death(The middle way). Also continue with safety innovations like air bags etc. to avoid fatalities. (comparable to getting palliative care better and better)
(c) There is no speed limit on any Autos and one can drive Hennessey Venom GT at 270MPH on any road/freeway. (Fatalities cross a million mark)

Now people who are moderate and choose (b) over (a) does not make them callous of 30K deaths in auto accidents. In fact they are in the middle path and avoiding the even greater fatalities by being part of option c. The people who choose (b) respect that whoever wants to drive in Horse carriage(like Amish) still can do, but they would like more acceptable choices.

What Brittany Maynard has done is chosen to drive at 65 MPH at Oregon instead of driving in a Horse Carriage at California.

That "C" option seems really good.

Yesterday, governor Jerry Brown signed right-to-die legislation into law in California.

It's what Brittany Maynard wanted.

For those who followed the discussion surrounding Brittany Maynard and the aid-in-dying legislation in California, here are a couple of updates:

Maynard's husband gives an interview:

TIME reports that since the law took effect in June 2016, over 100 people have used it:
