Sounds like it will be a fantastic trip whatever route you decide! Eric and I drove from San Francisco to San Diego over 8 days in Nov. of 2013. It was just beautiful, especially the drive from San Fran to LA.

My SIL did Route 66 with a friend when she was in college and said it was awesome. :)

I live in Nebraska so I wouldn't drive across. We took a vacation one time going down through Kansas to Dodge City, then Durango, CO, then passing through the Four Corners, the Grand Canyon and back through Santa Fe, NM, passing through Winslow AZ. Loved all those. Vegas is a must see, Hoover Dam too. And San Diego, so much to do there!

Rob, I can't remember your details, but if you are on SSDI you can get a pass for all the National Parks (and National Forests, etc.) that gives free admission and half-price camping. You might be able to get it just by being stage IV, not sure about that, but given your route and all the National Parks along your path, it may be worth the trouble to look into it. I have done a quick drive-through of many Parks that I didn't have time to really tour just because I had that pass and thirty minutes, and if you are a camper, the National Forest campgrounds can be either really nice or really primitive, which you choose depending on your style. :)
