Did irinotecan work on lung mets for anyone?

Postby gracelinedesign » Thu Sep 11, 2014 11:49 am

I have 10 spots and all grew slightly (all around 5 - 8 mm). I was on Folfox but have only been doing maintenance for the past 2 months... 5FU, Avastin, etc. Doc wants to try irinotecan and i'm simply devastated wondering what new side effects i'll have. Just getting my hair back from the oxi and now being told I might go bald. Guess that should be the least of my worries.

I'm also injecting mistletoe every 3 days and have just found my right dosage, so hoping that kicks in soon.

So scared these lung mets are gonna keep growing :(
Stage IIa rectal carcinoma 05/22/12
5 weeks 5FU/Radiation
Resection / temp ileostomy 10/16/12 - zero LN
5 out of 8 5FU, 1 round of oxaliplatin
Ileostomy reversal 3/21/2013
11/15/13 lungs mets - 10 nodes - Stage IV
2 years of FOLFOX and FOLFIRI
3/2016 - Keytruda

Hi Grace,

I have a lame answer for you since it seems no one has seen this yet. I had liver, not lung meet. I had 3 rounds of FOLFIRI and it slammed my liver met.Killed it completely dead. Then I had resection, and the path came back "dead, necrotic tumor" We knew it was live by PET before those 3 rounds. I hope someone who had lung mets will be around to talk with you about lung mets and FOLFIRI.

Warm best wishes to you, Grace.

xoxo

Depends on what you mean as "did it work". For me, it did not get rid of my five lung mets but it did keep them stable for a year until I was able to get in a clinical trial for SBRT.

Folfori was easier on me than Folfox.

Best to you,

FOLFIRI worked on me for awhile, can't remember exactly how long. But like Rob, it didn't kill them; just kept them from growing. I did lose my hair - it was so thin I shaved it. That was a lot harder than I expected at first, but once I got used to being bald, it was kind of convenient. Your head does get cold in the winter though. I thought everyone would "know" I had cancer because I was bald, but for the most part, I didn't get much attention from being bald, which was a relief.

As for the GI problems, they were minor - but since I have a colostomy, diahrea (sp?) isn't that big of a problem for me. At the first infusion it hit really fast though and I had to empty my bag once during my treatment, which was kind of awkward because it stinks so much!

Otherwise, FOLFIRI was easier to tolerate than FOLFOX. Not by a lot, but definitely easier.

I was switched from Folfox/Avasitan to Folfiri/Avastin. The reason for the switch was the Liver and Lung tumors were not responding to Folfox.

After 6 treatments of Folfiri the Pet Scan showed a fairly significant decrease in the Lung Tumors "lighting up". The Liver tumors were still getting bigger. The colon tumor they say, could be described as appendicitis now.

I am current on a 5 week break from chemo that will stretch into 8 or 9 weeks due chemoembolization performed last Monday and scheduled again in 2 to 3 weeks to do the other lobe.

Folfiri side effects hit me harder than Folfox. From my mouth to my a-hole was a mess. I am getting back to normal due to the break but that's only temporary. I am tired a lot. The only upside is the abatement of neuropathy which is looking to be permanent.

I was on irinotecan for a few months. Felt like crap for 2 or 3 days, diarhea. Hair loss after several weeks. I started back up on it this past spring. Higher side effects really bad diarrhea. I was not in great shake to start but I stopped after a few rounds..just too much.

Irinotecan has been about like folfox as far as severity of side effects. If I don't stay ahead of the diarrhea it gets out of control. I have to take atropine and Imodium. Seems like some rounds I feel pretty good. Others I feel crappy. This round is crappy.
Male Age 53. Dx CC with numerous liver mets 6/23/12. Colon res 6/24/12. Started folfox 7/24/12. Added avastin 8/27/12. CT 12/27/12 still showing shrink. Took 17 rounds of FOLFOX. Then 5-FU + Avastin. Switched to Irinotecan for 1 yr. CEA rose to >400. Switched to Vectibix 2/18/15. CEA decreasing. Scans show some growth in liver mets. Lung Mets stable to shrinking.

Folfiri plus avastin slowed or stopped the growth of multiple lung mets( over 20) for over four years for my dear husband. Never lost any hair. Nausea controlled by drugs. Didn't stop him from doing anything he wanted. I hope you have the same results. Every cancer is unique and hard to predict how it will respond. He was also KRAS wild type so no er tux for him. I wish you all the best

Hi Grace!

Where are you getting the mistletoe therapy? I have heard great things about it and may be headed that direction. Good luck! I know a lady who had all her mets completely disappear. She never did chemo, so it must have been the mistletoe.
