Hospital Stay Duration

My mother checked into the hospital last Friday (9/5) for her partial colon resection and checked out this morning (9/9), for a total of four and a half days in the hospital. I have a feeling that she should have stayed in the hospital for a few more days just to be safe. For all you colon-resection veterans, how many days did you stay in the hospital after colon resection? What is the normal average?

Surgery Tuesday. Discharged Friday. 3 nights
Ileostomy reversal 1 night.

My surgeon told me 5 days was the norm for open. I don't know average for laparoscopic. I had open surgery and pushed to get out in 4 days. Probably would have been better if I had stayed one more day.

I was told 4-5 days but I had a cracked catheter so I laid in my own urine for two days before they removed catheter and stents leaving me with diaper rash like a baby for two weeks. The nurses also forgot to put the cap back on the wound suction devise so that I sat in for a day ...pleasant. Next the nurses left the IV in my hand for too long so it got infected making my hand look like a loaf of round Italian bread ...that hurt more than the surgical area. I told the hospital DR I had an infection and I needed anti biotics "let's see what happens " was his response ASSHOLE I coulda and by the way did tell him I had an infection ....he sent me for an x-Ray on my hand ,how could I have broken my hand laying in a hospital bed for the past four days . Now I was pissed they started me on anti biotics right after I got back from x-Ray. Plus the detoxing drunken guy next to me who constantly tried to get out of bed and kept peeing in his bed he was like a real pain in the ass . I got zero rest and a hole lot of aggravation so I stayed for 8 days yes 8 days shoulda been out in 5 . My reversal is set for September 24 the and I asked my surgeon to put me on the oncology floor private rooms and good nurses he said no problem so at least I don't have to worry about stupidity. Like any other business good people and not so good people.
I believe this is about your mom I hope she does well and has a good expieriences and nice recovery my story is not the usual trust me I just think it's funny and pathetic but it is what it is.

It really depends on open or laparoscopic. I've just had open and I'm still here on my 7th day. But my body hates surgery and usually responds with some kind of infection so I've never been home in under a week.

I had an open resection and was in for 5 days. Couldn't wait!

5 days for my LAR and temp ilio, with a bonus liver wedge resection. I was ready to leave by the 5th day. Easier to recover at home. Good luck!

I had lap ....was told 5 days...was out in 3....also had my port put in, three skin cancer removed and a repaired hernia belly button

I am surprised at how quickly the human can heal (I hope!) and the advances in medical technology. Having a portion of the colon removed and then starting eating (albeit liquid food!) in under a week!

my husband had his 60% of his liver out, his rectum, and part of his colon, and had a temp ileostomy. It was robotic surgery. He was in for 5 nights - (was allowed to go at 4 but we wanted to be sure so stayed until morning just in case).

My DH had about 75% of his liver removed and was in for 8 days at Rochester, MN. It was a difficult surgery because of the proximity to major blood vessels so maybe that's why it was longer.

For me 4 days for original Laparoscopic colon resection, 12 days for HIPEC..... 13/14 days for a pelvic abscess (no surgery, just intervention)

11 days total for open colon resection. That is several days longer than normal due to infected incision. Nothing by mouth until around the 3rd or 4th day when I had first BM.

My first stay was 23 days in hospital.

My colon had ruptured and I was on Plavex for a heart stint and they had to wait 7 days before they could do any surgery for the Plavex effect to wear off. Colon was slow to wake up after. they would not send me home until it was functioning correctly.

Count your blessings. My husband was in the hospital 52 days following his colon resection. He had tons of complications. We saw other colon resection patients go in and out like revolving doors and were extremely jealous. I saw one man who had a cancerous kidney removed and he was out in 48 hours. It just depends if the gods of luck are with you or not. Even when they finally released my husband, I thought they were jumping the gun, but he recovered VERY quickly out of the hospital.
