IV Iron Infusion today

Postby raym » Fri Aug 29, 2014 6:05 pm

Had an IV Iron Infusion this morning. Never had one before but hoping it brings some much needed relief from fatigue. My crit is low as well as my iron. It is probably anemia from a chronic disease so a bit different than regular iron deficient anemia.

It helped me enormously and shot my ferritin up from 6 to 155. No more being utterly freezing even in summer, no more breaking brittle hair and cracked tongue. I hope it makes you feel heaps better. The only thing - i got awful flu like symptoms two days later and was pretty sick for a coupke of days, which apparently is normal. Totally worth it!

You should get an energy boost. I felt no bad effects from the infusion and plenty of relief. 8 months of chemo have kind of put a damper on the energy thing though.

Hope you feel better afterwards. I had one while in hospital after my LAR and I felt better pretty quickly afterwards. More energy and a lot less dizziness. Unfortunately I got an unrelated infection a few days later so it was hard to evaluate the true results of the infusion but I haven't had any problems since.

Hi Ray,

Thanks for the info. The oncologist is going to advise me on Friday whether it's time for iron infusion. Did you notice anything as it was being transfused or is it just like any other medication. Any burning sensation?

Thank you
:)

For this infusion they started with an IV steroid (to avoid a reaction). They then did a few minutes of iron to make sure I would not react badly. Apparently a reaction can be breathing difficulty. Once past than the infusion went pretty smooth (no burning). One side effect are aches after infusion (like day after). I did feel a bit sore Saturday afternoon into the evening.
