I have an innie stoma

Postby Cherie » Sun Aug 17, 2014 7:51 am

I'm a lucky girl my mum drove to my house today, cooked my meal, washed my clothes, did my gardening, chopped firewood, stacked two weeks worth of wood, did my recycling, vacuumed and motivated me out of bed. My 68 year old mother can run circles around me. It's like I'm the old woman and she is the 30 year old.

Anyway I have a loop illestomy and it's an innie and I have to change my bag two times a day. I can't stop it leaking and my skin is burnt. Anyone got any ideas...I'm working with a stubborn stoma nurse who's not giving up but you all have the experience. Please help...thank goodness this is temporary.

No experience, I wouldn't have posted but I read "temporary". I'm so glad for this "temporary" that I must write it down.

Cherie,

Call Cymed for samples on Monday morning...just might change your life. It certainly did for my husband who had both an innie and extensive swelling. Its a microfilm flang, much like tegaderm and forms a great seal. Jim went from having to change multiple times per day to every five days. I was going crazy trying to find something that would work. I sent pictures (yuck) to the company one morning and had a call within ten minutes of their opening. They sent two types of appliance via FedEx.

After the swelling subsided he switched to Convatec moldable and they work great on an innie, no more troubles. Both of these were used with a colostomy but I wish I had known about them when he had his innie ileostomy as well.

You can YouTube Cymed and find good info

The Convatec moldable worked well for me because I had a similar problem. I alternated between the convatec moldable and (can't remember brand) an oval one that didn't bother my skin so much. One for my stoma and one for my skin. Couldn't find one that worked for both. Best of luck. If you want more info, I took notes, but getting samples was the best thing for figuring things out.

Cherie, sorry to hear of your ostomy problems. I agree with ray that site has a lot of answers. Maybe just start getting a ton of samples until you find which works for you. I would definitely give salts a try.

"Innie" stomas are problematic. As others have suggested, try to find something that works. If not, I'd talk to (another) surgeon, especially if you're not expecting a reversal any time soon.

Good luck!

Call the ostomy companies and tell them what's going on. They should send you samples that will work for your stoma. I had the same problem until I started using the right bag. Good luck.
