Postby exaussie » Thu Aug 14, 2014 12:47 am

Has anyone had a rash from these patches? Dr had to take my son off of them because of horrible rashes. It looks like burns because of blistering

I'm a nurse. I've seen it. It is likely a reaction to the adhesive used to keep the patch on.

I had a mild reaction like that when I was using it. It is likely the glue they use. You might try putting them on a different place each time, try a different brand (there are generic and brand name formulation)s and you can try a hydrocortisone cream before applying the patch. It is a good form of pain relief so don't just give up on it.

I am highly allergic to the adhesive in just about anything and have had the reaction that you're describing when they took the Tegaderm patch off of my port. I was itching so badly and starting to carefully snip off the edges thinking that the problem was just my skin being 'pinched' or something. When they finally took it off (I made them do it early and replace it thinking that was the problem), my skin was blistered, red and oozing yellow liquid all over the place. Besides hating the pump, this reaction was a huge factor in my decision to change to Xeloda. We tried all different brands, including all the hypoallergenic ones and the only thing, outside of paper tape, that it appears that I can tolerate is a brand called MeFix. They have tape but a dressing as well. Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be a brand that is widely used, at least by hospitals, etc., so sometimes that can be an issue for me. I have no idea if the Fentanyl patches have different adhesives on them (generic brands, etc.) but it is worth asking about.
