BrownBagger wrote:Plenty of bunnies in the yard, but I've inspected the fence perimeter many times and can't find any security breaches. I think it's gotta be something that can climb. The electric fence wasn't working (until I fixed it last night) because the unruly tomato plants were making contact and shorting it out. The failure of the trail cam to pick up any activity last night might mean I fixed the problem. But, don't count on it. Got my order in for the have-a-heart traps.

And your fence goes 8-12 inches underground? Jeez, you might have some kind of mutant fence-climbing rabbits! :D However, groundhogs are especially fond of anything in the cabbage family and they do climb, so I think that's your culprit. A little zap should take care of the problem!

Thank you, Julie. I did not know that (though I'm not surprised, as they have huge , strong feet for digging). No, my fence stops about 3 inches under the ground level. As I said, however, I don't see where the rabbits could be digging a tunnel, but I guess that's their profession, so they're probably sneakier than I thought. (dumb bunnies, you know?)

The top of the fence was not securely fastened to the 2x4s that form the top of the fence, so I think they were climbing in and out that way, thus avoiding the electric strand. However, I fixed that yesterday, and tonight I'll lower the strand a few inches so they can't get under it without getting zapped.

In my darker moments of hate and despair, I considered just plugging the electric strands directly into my house AC/120 for a fatal jolt, but have concluded it would be both irresponsible and unnecessary overkill, so to speak. Trapping and relocating them into an alien environment might be even less humane, but easier on the superficial conscience. Best just to keep the beady-eyed little bastids out. Letting 'em pine for my goodies from the other side of the fence ought to be retribution enough. Let 'em think about what they did.

BTW, the groundhog causing all the trouble is named Ratso. He currently lives in my wood pile. One of his buddies had an unfortunate encounter with a shovel while conducting a raid. I think Ratso witnessed that, so he's been avoiding me lately.

"Stable is the new Black" ... yeah fresh veggies are nummy. With our lost of income for me and my husband having to stop working to be my caregiver, living off disability barely covers the basics or a 1 bedroom plus den apartment. We gave up our car, and 3 bedroom town house and just squeezing by month to month. I did get a treat for our anniversary on the 10th, I got fresh zucchini. I need to find a scracth n sniff book filled with veggies pictures lol. I may not post often but I do read this forum daily. I admire your courage and stamina.

Eric, that's great news. I think you'd have a fit if you saw my vegetable garden. It's a raised bed about 4X4ft. My wife "gave" me 4 tomato plants, plus I planted peppers and squash and I don't remember what else. The tomatoes have taken over the whole thing! If I knew how to do it, I'd post a picture of my flower garden. Have a great rest of the summer, and I hope you have a huge harvest. Will you be posting more pictures?

Went in for surgery for a cyst on my bladder, and they found colon cancer growing on the outside of the colon. Got to have two surgeries at the same time! Stage 3, one node involved.

Glad to hear the great news! We are very lucky to have Dr. Kemeny. It sounds like you are breaking thru her professional wall. It has been my plan the whole time. It makes visits a little more interesting. It is almost like a gambling but at least this gamble isn't my life. Do you think you can make the walk? I'd love to meet you.
