Calling hospice tomorrow

Postby Kathleen808 » Thu Aug 07, 2014 1:00 am

Hi Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for your wonderful words. They mean so much. You give me such comfort. I know you are here for us. Dick went to the onc today and told the onc that at times he was having trouble breathing. Sitting his O2 was around 95 but with any walking it went down to 83-85. That is a very scary feeling for him. After x ray and cat they said no blood clot but yes there is fluid around the lungs. He is going to have the fluid drained hopefully tomorrow (since the storm is supposed to hit early Friday morning). Also he now has oxygen at home if he needs it. The doc thinks he will get some good relief from the draining but still wants us to contact hospice. The clinical trial is still a small possibility but they may not take him with these new issues and they weren't even sure if they were taking him anyway. I am so grateful that his best friend was here for the day and that my sister and bil are here. I will keep you posted as I know you are in this with us.

Aloha,
Kathleen

Kathleen:

Yes, we are all here for you at any time....to vent, to ask, to just let yourself go. I know it is a very trying and difficult time for you and Dick. Prayers coming from Texas that this situation is handled the best way possible. It definitely takes time to sort through it all and make the best decisions possible. You have been through a lot yourself. Here is the hope that you handle each situation with the grace, honesty, courage and strength that you have handled everything up to this point. I know that you will. Andre

So sorry that Dick is suffering, and you right along with him. You have been such a good partnership on this journey - a role model for many I'm sure. Will be holding the two of you close in my heart. Praying that the drainage gives Dick comfort & room to breathe. Stay strong butt lean on us if you stumble, we are all here for you both. Hugs! We are with you, Kathleen! What an incredible amount of stress you must be under with all this AND two hurricanes on the way! I'm sad that Dick can no longer get out on the surfboard and enjoy that part of his life, but I know you will be there for him and help him through this and he's so lucky to have you there with him in this final part of the journey. I wish there was something we could do other than wish you peace and strength. Be well, my friend!

Kathleen...I am sorry to read that Dick is having such a difficult time. I hope that the draining brings him much relief and you are able to come up with a plan. I wish Dick peace and no pain, and for your family lots and lots of time to make more loving memories. I know myself and many others are sending positive thoughts and energies that he will be able to participate in the trial and it will bring the results he needs.

Take care and gentle hugs to you both...

You may already know this but some doctors prescribe morphine drops as an aid to the body in low oxygen states. In addition it lowers anxiety.

It was prescribed for my father-in-law who was on oxygen during his in-home hospice care and seemed to me to comfort him.

Here's a link if you care to look at it—http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/34361.php

Wishing you both peace,

Kathleen,
So sorry you and Dick are going through this. I don't post much, but have been following your story for many years. My husband is almost 8 years post Dx and has been in hospice care since June 1. He has extensive lung and liver mets. He started getting short of breath around Memorial Day, they put in a pleurex drain and took our 2 liters of fluid. It changed his life, he was able to eat again, etc. You can then drain at home as needed. In his case, for the first month we could drain more a few times a week. The past month is has been dry and his breathing is better.
Hospice has been great, one of the scariest things is just calling them because it makes end of life very real. We love our hospice nurse and doctor.
Will be thinking of you both as you ride out the double hurricanes...and praying that the draining brings Dick relief.
Keeping you and Dick in my thoughts,
Hugs,
Bill

Glad to hear that Dick now has O2 at home and that Hospice is coming on board. Someone else here mentioned fast acting liquid Morphine. I would imagine the hospice nurse will discuss this with you if you don't already have some. When my husband went on O2 he was also given some liquid morphine. We were sure glad that he got it when he did. It made quite a difference when he was short of breath due to low O2 saturation. Hoping that draining the fluid around the lungs brings some relief for Dick. I so hope that the clinical trial works out for him.

Kathleen, my thoughts are with you and Dick. Hospice can be a real help. Stay safe with the storms that are approaching.

Went in for surgery for a cyst on my bladder, and they found colon cancer growing on the outside of the colon. Got to have two surgeries at the same time! Stage 3, one node involved.

Dear Kathleen,
I still hope there is some miracle Dick can pull this one off too, i pray the lungs get cleared and he can gain some strength. Hope the storm is just wind and rain and doesn't prevent Dick getting better. Call me anytime you need anything..or just to vent
