Slowing down ileostomy

Postby KWT » Fri Aug 01, 2014 8:49 pm

How much Metamucil do you take to thicken up ostomy output? Any other ideas welcomed.
Thanks,

I never tried Metamucil but peanut butter, mashed potatoes, and white rice worked for me.

Not sure if you've seen this program before - but here it is just in case. It's for people who are still connected, but a lot of it still applies - the slowing down the frequent pooping, etc. I used parts of it when I had my reversal - it helps.

Somebody told me once to drink orange or grapefruit juice with lots of pulp. Of course, that was a guy from Florida……. Bet some dude from GA would have recommended peaches.

I'm from Wisconsin originally, and cheese always jams me up.

I heartily second the rice. It's soluble fiber and will give you a "clean slide" as will Metamucil or any other soluble fiber, IME. A clean bag is a happy bag.

My experience with bananas with an ileostomy was completely contrary to what you're trying to achieve. It dropped into the bag about 20 minutes after consuming it. I'm like, "Dude, I just ate you!"

Another vote for bananas. That was by far the bet for me. In fact, nothing else seemed to have much effect.

hi- immodium works for me, in that it slows the transit time down and allows more water to be adsorbed out of the stool. Thus, thickening things up.

White rice is my thickener of choice. My wife is Asian and we have a rice cooker on the counter, so we almost always have leftover rice. I start the day with a heaping teaspoon of metamucil stirred in water, mostly as a way to stay regular. When I need thickening, I go for rice, not metamucil. Alternative thickeners include tapioca and mac & cheese. Bananas and peanut butter help but don't do quite as much for me.

Recommended on ostomy site, marshmallows...seriously. If you're watching sugar intake they may not be a good thing, but eating peanut butter with Fluffernutter helped me as needed.

I was on and am still on a low fiber diet. I controlled my output with upwards of 8 immodium caplets every day. The amount was prescribed by my surgeon. I also had a prescription for dyphenoxylate/atropine in case the immodium wans not getting it done. Pooping too much can create a hydration issue and because I hate Gatorade I used (and still do) a caplet form of electroltytes.

The Nuuns tabs are the shiz. I always keep a big glass of water available at night with a Nuuns tab handy, because it really takes care of the cotton mouth, etc. Relaxes and helps me sleep better, too.
