SkiFletch wrote:Yeah, the PT is nuts. I did the full gamut of upper body weight lifting exercises when I had my port. About the only things I didn't do was exercises which REQUIRED me to hold a bar across my front shoulders. Like front bar squats, or clean/jerks were not ideal because the port would contact the bar directly. And that wasn't comfortable. Admittedly for the first 2-4 weeks post implant, I wouldn't have done any such exercises, but after it's all nice and bound up in there, have at it.

Fletch gave me this advice and I ran with it. I asked the guy who inserted my port about what not to do at the gym and he told me to just use good judgement. I lifted weights during chemo and had the port for a good time after chemo with no problems.
I'm just a dude who still can't believe he had a resection and went through chemo (currently 13 years NED). Is this real life?

I bumped mine doing hammer curls. Not fun!

I did dumbbell benching instead of barbel for that very reason.

Three and a half weeks after port implatation I was out to windsurf.....only low wind conditions and grandmother style. But I had to carry the equipment into the water and to elevate the arm over 90 degrees (not all the time)
My port worked /works fine, treatment today, 3 days after windsurfing.

I asked my Onc about sport, but he didn´t know so much. My port was insert of an anesthetist, he didn´t knew more....

Listen to your body, when it hurts, it was to much.

My port was placed in my subclavian since my surgeon couldn't get it to go in my internal jugular. The IV nurse who did my education (and who inserted my PICC when I was in the hospital) said that I needed to avoid over head lifting because of the "scissoring" action between my clavical and first rib.

WOW Very good!!!! My wife's race July 4th she did better than she expected to. The race was a 5K at a pace of about 10.2 min per mile I think it was. Prior to her diagnosis she was doing 10K and half marathons in the 9:30 to 10 min pace. I walked the 5K and did a better than 14 min per mile pace, but I really book when I walk. Congratulations on your run! BTW last week my wife ran 3 miles the morning she went in for her 5F-U/Avastin treatment. 4 days after disconnect from her pump she ran her best time so far over a 5K course since her resection a year ago. She followed that with a horse back ride with her best friend then the two of them trained dogs in the woods in 80 degree heat for about an hour! Iron Woman anyone?

Hi! I just came from yoga with my port (installed mid April - so about 6 weeks out). My port annoys me daily but I've been told I just need to get used to it. I noticed at yoga that it bothered me when I did anything hanging (like rag doll) or arms up. Nobody gave me any restrictions with my port (except the first week) but the comment about it being close to your heart gives me pause. Thanks for these posts!

It took a while for me to get used to the port. I've had mine for a year now and it doesn't bother me. I can do anything I used to do at this point.

Give it more healing time.
