Is Long term care worth it?

Postby stars9979 » Fri Jun 27, 2014 10:10 pm

Im not sure if anyone has experience with this...

basically it has been strongly suggested to get onto state long term coverage. To cover durable medical equipment and to get nurses to come out to assist with the illeostomy bag, as well as posibly myself being paid to be a stay at home care taker.

We started the application process which requires her to apply for disability and then more I am reading about this program, they have something called the "estate recovery program" which is if after she is 55 (next year) and on this program they will i guess take what they can property wise to recoop expenses paid. The only thing of value she has is her nissan xtera, which she would want me to have, its old 2001 and her baby.

The disability process was ok, just a nightmare, and the same with this long term care. I feel like there are not enough hours in the day.

Her third round of chemo was the 26th, and it made her very very tired today. She has the cold sensitivity. but her appetite is strong.

Im just wondering if anyone has any experience with this and if its something we should even get into. I dont know who I could possibly talk to about our concerns or if maybe this is something we should consider further down the line....

Hum... My 54 year old wife continued to work through all 12 FOLFOX plus Avastin treatments that she started in early august 2013. She is stage IVb, and is now on maintenance therapy once every three weeks. Things look pretty stable right now. No need for long term care at this point. She isn't even on any sort of disability. Just goes to show you everyone is different.

I would put this off as it might limit her options in the shorter term. I wish Katherine were still here as she had the best insights and research around these issues. Hopefully some one with some expertise in this area will pipe up.

Regards,

This is something I haven't considered. I'll be following along, learning. Thank you.

I've just recently learned that a pension I have can start this early for me. At a significant discount, of course, but getting some is better than none.

I too don't have answers, but bumping in hopes that someone out there does.

Good luck, I was thinking of you and your mother the other day.

Thank you Lee :)

We have chosen to wait, I need to call that department about the estate recovery plan to get some answers first. Until then we are doing everything that we can to keep her home health nurse. :)
