CEA and Scans

Postby drebay » Wed Jun 04, 2014 10:44 am

Do the Drs tend to rely on solely the CEA and stop doing scans? My CEA was 14 about 6 weeks ago and 2 weeks ago was 28. Haven't had a scan in awhile and Dr. hasn't scheduled one. I tried searching for this at this site, but "CEA" brought me 492 pages! I did have a cycle of treatment again after being off since Feb, pending a liver resection that never came. (Tumor found in Lung which WAS resected). According to my Oncologist, I do have the marker so they are going to watch that. I just feel uncomfortable not having the scans to see what is going on.

reading Peabody's post in the other post seems to verify what I was thinking.

Don't watch! Push for a PET scan! I went from 4 to 10 and they did one.

My CEA was dropping from (if I remember right) 138 to 83 to 58. The Onc was really upbeat but in her wisdom, she wanted a PET scan to verify her optimism.

Tumors in the Liver and Lungs are still growing.

After 9 rounds of Folfox, 6 of those with Avastin, she immediately changed me over to Fofiri with Avastin, which is stomping my ass. Oxi was way easier than this stuff but my options appear to be dwindling.

I just asked to keep me alive long enough to get into an immuno therapy trial. That seems to be the future for cancer treatment. I hope we all have a chance to benefit from it, if it works.

Yea they had some encouraging news with some T cell trials. In 2 our of 8 pts in the trials, uteran cancer was gone. It help 1 but had not response in rest. That was on the news the other night. They also said they could use this with colon cancer, etc as well. Apparently they use your own immune system to kill cells. There is hope in some areas.

My CEA was 6.4 when I was dx'd with a liver met. I'd demand a PET scan asap.
Stage III cc surgery 1/7/09. 12 tx FOLFOX
Stage IV PET = 1.5cm liver met. HR 4/11/12

14 years since dx and 11 years post liver resection.

Without the PET scan, my new lymps would not have been found. Be more aggressive with these dr. I wish I had known better. I just kept being told everything looked great. I wonder if they had done a scan or colonoscopy in the last year they would have found these new sites earlier or at least the tumor in the original site in the colon. All of these new tumors are almost 2 inches in diameter now. I have not symptoms at all except for the PET scan results. What do you have to gain????? Catching it early!
I am being pushy with trying to get an appointment at MD Anderson and so far it has got me nowhere after 2 wks, but hey, call me a bitch! it is my life.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Although, in my case, the PET didn't see something the CT did. I see him on Tuesday and will push for another set of scans.

The rising CEA fortold the tail. DX: 2 Aortic, 1 S2 spine and 1 reocurring at original site. Only treatment: Chemo for life. No surgery recommended by MDA. This sucks to go from NED to this state almost immediately. If it was not for the dr. rechecking the rising CEA level and then scanning I would still be at home thinking I was fine.
