Pregnancy after Chemo?

Postby SunnyD » Mon May 05, 2014 7:33 pm

Hello everyone!

I will be starting Xeloda in a few weeks and my oncologist suggested I meet with a Fertility specialist as I am 28 and may want children later in life. Today I did meet with the doctor and am confused which route to go, he told me there is only 40% chance that if necessary IVF would work later. I have decided that I am going to forego the egg harvesting and keep faith in God because he has brought me this far in life. I am just curious as to what anyone else has experienced? I am single right now but do hope to have a family one day.

I appreciate everyone's help! Thank you so much! I am meeting with my oncologist tomorrow to discuss the treatment plan going forward.

Thanks once again!

Sunny

That's a tough one.

Are you currently married?

In any case you may want to trust all the resources that God has made available to you.

Hi Sunny,
I agree with Christyrice you are in a tough spot. For me, chemo and rad sent me straight into early menopause( I was 37 at the time of diagnosis). It is now 4 years later (to the day) and I still have not has a period. My advice to you is to Consider all the options you have at your disposal. Make the decision that best fits the goals you have for your future and be confident in your decision. I too am a person of faith and I believe that God gives us the tools we need, it is our responsibility to reach out and grab them.
Best of luck to you on your treatment journey.
Tammie

I did a chemo and radiation combo that threw me into menopause when I was 35. My oncologists didn't even discuss my fertility beause I already have 2 kids, and I assume they thought my family was complete. In the whirlwhird I never questioned the doctors. This is my biggest regret. I so wish I did SOMETHING.

I would harvest eggs and then pray it works one day... at least there is a 40% chance, much better than no chance, consider it your insurance for a rainy day... This sucks, very sorry you are in such a dilemma, to say the least...

My fiancée and I froze embryos prior to chemo. We managed to save 12. I see it as a backup plan. I don't think I've gone through menopause because of the chemo but since colorectal cancer is so rare under age 50, there isn't much data concerning fertility after folfox....
