And good to see you too skypup. I am surprised that you have been seen by a pain specialist, that you have tried a variety of narcotics, that your pain relief is inadequate and nausea is a problem. And yet no one has suggested fentanyl patches. Same indication as for all narcotics, ie moderate to severe pain. Ask about them, they will provide good background round the clock pain relief (go for the 50 mcg patch, not the 25).

yicks

I have 93 allergies but most are to pain meds. I have Tylenol but have tried 2 mg dialatid (spell). My kidney doc wants me on a patch fen tonal I think. sorry chemo and steroids mess with my brain.

I was also told to take before the pain of hours o working on taxes got me. However since the colon cancer is eating my lungs I am scare to take much. Lucky me - not a lot of pain just that darn hand and foot.

I bitched to doctor that 99 percent of the pain meds give me one hell of a migraine headache and I had this problem 18 years. It started the 91 issues and kidney function on pain meds. However, I do not suffer so guess I am blessed today. who knows what tomorrow offers.

http://www.duragesic.com/

DURAGESIC® is indicated for management of persistent, moderate to severe chronic pain that:

Requires continuous, around-the-clock opioid administration for an extended period of time, and
Cannot be managed by other means such as nonsteroidal analgesics, opioid combination products, or immediate-release opioids

DURAGESIC® should ONLY be used in patients who are already receiving opioid therapy, who have demonstrated opioid tolerance, and who require a total daily dose at least equivalent to DURAGESIC® 25 mcg/hr. Patients who are considered opioid-tolerant are those who have been taking, for a week or longer, at least 60 mg of morphine daily, or at least 30 mg of oral oxycodone daily, or at least 8 mg of oral hydromorphone daily or an equianalgesic dose of another opioid.

My husband is on fentanyl patches, and additionally uses oxycodone for breakthrough pain. When the current combo no longer controls his pain, the dosage of the patch is increased. He was very resistant to using narcotics earlier in his disease progression, but now the pain is such that he needs a lot of pain control. We try to keep in mind that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" when it come to keeping pain managed. Not letting the pain build up is very important in pain management.

[It is essential that you work closely with your physician and pharmacist when using fentanyl patches. Those medical professionals who know your particulars are the ones to rely on for safety on dosage.]

Thank you for the info, Patience. I'm sorry your husband has to deal with the pain. Ugh. Thank you for being a caregiver!
