1st Post treatment PET scan results- What does this mean?

Postby StupidAssCancer » Wed Mar 26, 2014 7:03 pm

My doctor just called with my post treatment pet scan results. The year ago I had surgery and had my email cancer removed along with a J pouch ileostomy formed. I have since then completed chemotherapy and radiation, and had my takedown. Today my pet scan results came back and he left them on my voicemail and of course it's too late to call him back. He stated that there was three areas that lit up on the pet scan. One was located in my left groin, a lymph node the second area of concern was to lymph nodes in my left nut and the third area that lit up was in my rectal area. He feels the rectal area is due to post surgery changes however he is going to watch this.
The groin and neck nodules that have lit up... Is this normal? What could this be? Talk to me if you know and can help me.... Thank you so very much!
Xo,
Alys

Dear Alys,
I know how nerve-racking is that waiting game...i'd just say that sometimes things lit up due to inflammation...also if an area had radiation or surgery performed it may lit up too..i'd say try to not think about it as much as possible until you talk to your doc and then when you do ask him if there is a need to do a CT scan to confirm/reject any possibilities
Good luck!

Ok..."breathing" ;)
Your so right! They can totally be nothing. Just a reactive node. I think I was just looking forward to hearing " Your scan is clean" that this news seemed huge and scary when in reality it's just another node.
I did some reading and it is possible for this to be a met to my groin node, and to my neck however highly unlikely from what I've read.
Thank you for bringing me some peace!

I've found more info here however over the past year than any of my drs have given me.
That in its self is scary as well!

Tomorrow I will have finished my second FOLFOX treatment. I have Stage 3 colon cancer. So far, I have been handling all the side effects very well. I can still eat anything I want....but tend to eat less during thr three days of chemo..then fatten back up the following week. :D I know all about doctors. I had a colonoscopy at one hospital on Dec 12.....they called me on the phone and told me to find someone to take care of the flat polyp they found because I lived four hours away (long story, so I'll spare you the details lol). I asked my GP for a GI doctor. After I told the original GL doctor's assistant that I made an appointment with a GL, she got the doctor on the phone and said I needed a surgeon. I went to the GI doctor as I was going to be needing one anyway. His assistant came into see me and asked me a lot of questions. Then the doctor comes in and at the end of a 20-minute discussion, he said.."You know this polyp was cancerous don't you." I told him this was the first time anyone told me. He said, "Didn't my assistant tell you?' I said, "No, she didn't" So I found a colorectal surgeon through my GP....had colon resection on Feb 10 and my first chemo treatment on Mar 11....so that's my beginning story...I guess, in relation, to your story....it's like pulling teeth to find out what's going on.....everyone thinks someone else gave you the bad news. My original diagnosis was 3c, but somehow from Feb 10 to Mar 11, it became 3b. Go figure.....

Alys, previously you had listed: Sept 2013-PET active lite up Lymps left neck

Was this ruled out or is this the same area lighting up again?
Stage III cc surgery 1/7/09. 12 tx FOLFOX
Stage IV PET = 1.5cm liver met. HR 4/11/12

14 years since dx and 11 years post liver resection.
Pronounced CURED and discharged by onc

This is the exact same area lighting up again in my left neck. The left groin is new.
Between this PET and the last PET the did a CT scan of the neck as well as tried to biopsy unsuccessfully. The two nodes lighting up are between karadid artery and jugular vein. Making it difficult for then to get a sample safely.
What do you take of the same area lighting up 2 times in a row?
Thank you,
Alys
