It all depends on the type of benefit that you want to throw. It is possible to get things donated to cut down on expenses, but it really helps to have personal connections to get these things. My friends threw two benefits for me and they kept the costs fairly low - free locations for a poker tournament and concert. All of the artists at the concert played for free.
The biggest problem that they faced was that I couldn't have the money in my name. It would interfere with medicaid coverage. So it is held in an account in someone else's name and they pay some of my expenses out of that accout.
I wasn't really involved in the planning (they wouldn't let me help), but if you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to ask my friends.
